Hey guys,

I need help rendering out a reflection pass. I am using Final Gather to light my scene and when I go to create a FG box that will create the reflections, the reflections don't show up, but the light that is being emitted from the box is obviously emitted because it shows up on the ground. The shader on my object is blinn, the color is black, diffuse=0, specular = white, reflectivity = 1.

I have tried to find tutorials out there that are up to date and will actually help, but all that I have found is stuff using the first version of Maya. I've read them, but they don't help.

I want an image like this:

I understand how it's reflecting and all, I just can't duplicate the look.

I was thinking that maybe the text and the FG box isn't connected, but I THOUGHT I did that and did it again and still same thing... BUT I retarded when it comes to connections and I am extremely new to Final Gather so if this is the problem, someone tell me how to do it correctly.

If anyone can link to a tutorial that can help, It would be much appreciated
If anyone can sum up a tutorial in easy to follow steps, I will worship you.

Attached is the result of my render when I create an FG box that is emitting white and has a value that is high enough to blind you.

The second attached picture is of my perspective and how everything is setup. Notice how the FG box is right in front of my object.

I'm not sure what your problem is. An object that you use as a FG light source does not get reflected? FG should have nothing to do with reflections (or not in that sense). Every object in the scene contributes to the FG solution, and I don't see what it has to do with reflections (usually people have the problem to want FG but no reflection from an object)

Maybe I misunderstood.

I guess you should really post this question in the maya rendering forum.

I may have been a tad bit confusing. But the picture up top with the car has a clear reflection of an FG source, I want to try and duplicate that effect with my scene (have my FG source get reflected by the letters).

I did some more digging around and the letters wont reflect any lightsource whatsoever. I will create a spotlight, put the intensity to match the sun (BRIGHT) and the letters still wont reflect. However, the letters do reflect reflections (It will reflect the light hitting the ground but nothing else).

You should really ask Maya questions on a Maya forum, you'll get more replies.

If your surface color is black then you get no diffuse light reflectance. Same goes if you also turned the diffuse to 0. Your lights won't do anything (except possibly give you a specular highlight) if your surfaces are set to reflect 0% of the diffuse illumination. It also won't respond to Final Gathering. All you would get is a raytraced reflection of the white objects.
