View Full Version : Hobbit Style WIP
Willax 03-10-2003, 03:12 AM Hi all. This is a still from an animation short I am working on. Before I get too much farther, I wanted to get some input from the community so I thought I would post it here. Any suggestions always welcome and appreciated. It was done in Lightwave 7.5 which I've had since October, so I'm still pretty much a noob. I need to learn from your crits to get better so please post.

Its a good start, but you have some tweaking to do.
-I think the colors of the materials need to be heavily desaturated. The color are a bit too "loud".
-You should fool around with the lighting. Try to do some lightning tutorials to get that outdoors look. And teyto work on the shadows, they look to sharp.
-Try to avoid those tiling textures like the path in front of the door.
-Get some alpha's for those leaves. Those things you got now dont really work.
Hope this helps, good luck!

-The path could use some work, path aren't perfectly square on the edges. You should try to make it look worn out.
-Also your trees are kinda weird, maybe a problem with an alpha channel or somthing.
-You might want to try rethinking some of your textures, like on the steps toward the house and on the tree trunks.
- The grass on the top of the hill looks nice, but kinda sparce on the lower ground. Also on the area where the door is it that has no grass, you might want to make it look like dirt, or add grass to that area.

The most immediate place I'd say you need more work is in your texturing. You should take a look at Leighs texturing tutorial or the great tutorials at Dvgarage. The sidewalk he's walking down looks like pretty obvious tiling, and the texture on the character looks a little funny.
Modeling wise i think you should add some variation to the background. Everything's so flat, add some bumpiness to the ground and the path he's walking on. The flowers in front of the house look like they're arranged as a perfect line, move em around a lil. Everyone else covered the trees. It could stand to have a few more details modeled.
Good start just keep at it.

Thanks everyone for your great tips. That gives me some good direction on what I need to work on. I think I'll do a bump map on the roadway, add some texture to the stepping stones, thicken up the short grass a bit, replace the trees with some different ones, and yes, the flowers are all lined up straight. Gotta fix that too. The lighting is pretty generic too. Thanks for the advice on that. Gotta work on getting that outdoor look for that too.

I kinda like it the way it is... it's a true render in the Noobian Style. I don't know... it makes me smile looking at it. :)
