Anyone have an overview of the app itself? I'm here using the demo and I'm as lost as anything, I can't even rotate the viewport :p. The demo had no docs which was weird.

indeed, the 1, 2 and 3 keys +mouse are currently set to pan, zoom and rotate. if you go to Window->Layout->Command Manager you can set the keys how you want.

maybe we should have a basics of the program thread for new users, as i'm sure we're going to see a lot more from this app, and a lot more people are going to get really interested in how to use this.

does anyone know if the old v7 tutorial docs are still online as they were superb.

anyhow if you want the docs for teh current version they should have downloaded with the app, have a search for these two files (the rest should be with them)

C4D Reference US.pdf
C4D Tutorials US.pdf

if you can't find them then you can download them from maxons website

http://www.maxon.de/pages/download/download_documentation_e.html

everyone here's friendly (more or less), so ask away.

Howdy!

I've just completed three tutorials for C4D:

HDRI Compendium about:

C4D and HDRI. What is it good for? Making HDRIs on your own. Working with HDRShop, Making good Light probes.

Chanlum tut:

Making belieavable subsurface scattering fakes with the Chanlum plugin.

Global Illumination Test Scenes:

A small collection of test scenes for GI renderers. Picked from Brian Smits and Henrik Wann Jensen and converted into C4D-files. With some comment about what these scenes are goo for. A good training for people who want to learn how to tackle down the C4D Radiosity render.

There's one problem. I'v written my stuff in German so it may need a few days for translation. Please be patient.

The German versions are available at 3D-worXX:

Extruding and deforming words written via the TextObject in Cinema usually doesn´t look to good. To get clean words that can be deformed I came to this conclusion.
You need BetterBool and MakeThicker plugins for this. The trick is to get a superclean mesh of the letters.

1- Type the word in the text object. Make sure it´s set to the default "adaptive, 5°" setting.

2-ExtrudeNurb it. The thickness is not importent. Keep it at default 20m.

3-Now make a plane set to Orientation -Z axis and subdivision 100 by 100.

4- Put the Plane in the middle of your word makin sure it covers the word.

5-Make a BetterBool set to "A intersect B" and "Create single object" activated.

6- Put the Plane and the ExtrudeNurb objects in BetterBool making sure the Plane is above the Nurb.(Put the Nurb in first)

You should now have a cutout flat word. Take a look in WireframeView.

7- Make the Boolean object editable (Press "C")

8-Move the "Plane"polygon object out and delete the other "by-products".

9- Finaly, select the "plane" and apply "MakeThicker". Set the phongTag to about "20". Ta-Daa!!

A clean word mesh that looks great in any deformer.
If you now have a "Wrap" deformer as a child to it your done.

PS. Right after using the MakeThicker the front polygones are selected. Make that a selection so you can change the thickness of the word later at any time.DS.

Hope this helps.

Cheers.

UpDate! Extruding and deforming words STILL EDITABLE

Extruding and deforming words written via the TextObject in Cinema usually doesn´t look to good. To get clean words that can be deformed I came to this conclusion.
You need BetterBool and Paul´s Auto Extruder plugins for this(Both free).

7- Put the Bool in a Null.

8-Put AutoExtruder as no 3 in the Bool (see pict)

9- Finaly, put any deformer you like in the Null. Ta-Daa! Away you go!

Now you can animate the text by retyping and putting keyframes for any new word.

Hope this helps.

Cheers.

Faking HDRI in C4D (not yet)

Photographing HDRIs, combining in HDRShop, All mapping types in HDRShop, getting rid of the photographer in mirror ball photos, 3d reconstruction of photographic environments (maybe also with a short introduction into ICARUS), differential rendering, meaning the seamless integration of synthetic objects into background photographs, in consideration of global illumination solutions and/or HDRI. I'll also add some chapters about color spaces, color space conversions, spectral rendering (diffraction, interference) and maybe about BRDF's and other material representations in rendering applications.

paulselhi,

Thanks for the GREAT TP/Expresso tut! I've downloaded and have been studying TimC's generous examples but I love your take on it.

BTW, did you have trouble with the material settings in his files? For some reason all of the materials are broken when I open the scenes. Perhaps it is because I have 8.2?

paulselhi
06-22-2004, 02:35 PM
Yes i used 8.5 for that scene and i think his were made in 8.5

for may example i used the xray mats available on renderosity but if you follow the tut you can make the mats yourself, there is also a tut for these mats floating around some where

May be you know this problem: You want to modify an imported 3ds, dxf, obj... Model in Cinema 4D. On top its triangulated. Making any modifications or new parts makes a lot of work and is sometimes nearly impossible..

Now Cinema 4D R9 solves this problem with N-Gons.

In the following example we would like to show you, how easily you can modify the hood of an triangulated car model.

You learn how to reconstruct a real scene geometry.
You learn about the difference it makes when you reconstruct the scene geometry.
You learn how to make the background geometry interact with the cg objects in either direction. Now you are able also to integrate GI into the compositing process.

If you are interested, take a look here:

I've got Snapz now so I got to use it, right?.
This is a short tut that might help if you are using similar shaders (like Noice) in different Channels. Usually if you make a change in one channel you have to manualy and/or copy/paste the changes into the other channel.
This is a way to prevent that.

2min 3MB QT.

Speaking of Rendering. I am new in C4d. My boss asked me to study it. Do any of you guys know how to allocate or construct a bone for the entire body? I just finished a body and I have to make it move. I constructed bones. I put the first bone in the head, to the neck and all the way down. As I twist, the face twists as well (the nose don't follow completely. This thing also happens to the abdominal specially the lower abs. Simply, the body don't move as I intended.

Can anyone help me?

Working with Thinking Particles I tried to emulate the effect of a spacecloud, pushed away by an object (i.e. a starships deflector - definetley not my initial idea). This was just intended as a little exercise (as it is my first XPression with more than a hand full of nodes). But as allways one shouldn't use the word 'just' and 'little' in computergrphics...

Well I learned a lot by struggling with it. And as an all to eager teacher I tried to make it understandable for otheres and thus commented the whole thing. I really don't know if it is interesting but maybe someone might find it useful or even instructive (keep in mind that I consider myself quite a small light in Thinking Particles yet).

If someone thinks it is of any use just tell me (even the use as a bad example IS a use ;-) ).
Have fun creating!

To get the zip-file (30kB) just click here (http://www.cogra-flg.de/forum/material/spacecloud3.zip).

(And thanks to Srek for mentioning ideas to control particle-attributes by speed or other values)

Building (arch) tutorial on-line (italian)

Hi
for italian speaker we translate under permission the tutorial of Antoine Auerty and Stéphane Lallet. The original traslation project is by Seagate aka nicola Zanardi (collaborator of c4dhotlie.it) and I helped a bit for technical traslation, layout and pdf production.

If you are interested visit C4dhotline.it (http://www.c4dhotline.it) and take a look at the tutorial area Building > tutorial no 53.

Hi everyone.

I wrote a new Tutorial about Character Modeling, or to be more precise: Low Polygon Human Body Modeling. The Focus is just on Creating the Body and getting it roughly done in an easy and fast Way.
As you can see when you take a Look at the Tutorial, it's all about Box-Modeling, mirroring one Half and Putting Everything into a Hypernurbs Object.
I have finished it just today and would like to hear what you Guys think of it (the final Model and the Modeling Process itself).
C&C welcome.

A very basic "Abstract" tutorial. Of course, this is really for extreme beginners, and it's encouraged that people who use it, expand beyond what this tutorial has to offer.

I've been messing about with GI and other stuff in Electric Image for a few weeks and have started now to see what can be done in c4d using EI as a yardstick as it were.
The GI in EI is fast and simple to use- it would be even faster if they implemented the use of dual core processors in a practical useable way.
C4d has the edge in speed terms because of dual core implementation. A big thing I notice back using c4d is the absolute sheer convenience and useabilitu of the app (c4d). Downside is the poor bumpmapping in c4d from most of procedural system.

Thanks, Martin, very useful to those of us still tempted by the current EIAS upgrade deal. Looks like I'll be putting it off even longer. Also a great plug for C4D, besting the self proclaimed, ''Worlds Fastest Renderer''.:applause:

Oh dear...
Ei is the Holy Grail for illustrators using procedural shaders- a bit ponderous for bitmaps. I don't animate and so can't speak on that score. The GI is very good in EI. Not sure it cant be replicated in c4d though- I'm experimenting still.
As for the world's fastest render- I don't know. I'd think it was swings and roundabouts depending on what you do- its difficult to make absolute fair comparisons. I'd say that both apps are both pretty fast. C4d has the advantage of proper utilisation of dual core.

very well done imo, one of the best rigging tuts I've seen yet for r10, you did a good job of showing things so the lack of audio didn't seem to be an issue, but then again i'm also very experienced in this area so I didn't really need an explanation as to what you were doing. You should find a better venue for hosting such tutorials, be it the portal or cafe or even talk to maxon about cineversity, I think the biggest thing lost in this tutorial was the clarity because of the size and compression that youtube is limited to.

I started a page for some TP tutorials.

The first two tutorials cover the basics - generators and groups.

I tried very hard to make sure I explained why you are doing each step, so it is not all "Do this. Do that. Do this. etc."

The generators tutorial covers PStorm, PBorn, PMatterWaves, and PFragment.

The groups tutorial covers the TP Settings window, Particle Groups, PPass, Pgroup, PDeflector, PWind, PSurfacePosition, and PAlignment.

These should be some really nice starting tutorials for people who have never worked with Thinking Particles. Hopefully, I'll get some more time soon, and add some advanced lessons.

SynthEyes Tutorial related to C4D.

I recorded a quick tutorial to somewhat show how the Y-up-left preferences etc work in SynthEyes. Thought I would share it with the community.

This probably won't be of any help to advanced SynthEyes users but it should be beneficial to newer users of SynthEyes and matchmoving in general.

Hi otomo,

this is really really helpfull! never even saw the exclusion tab before. :bounce:

one question however, In the case you use a hard light, you still get the shadows of the sub-objects overlapping eachother. How can I best prevent this?

hmmm, i have no problems with hard shadows / raytraced shadows. Can you post a pic?

Overlapping hard shadows of several light sources isnt a problem of transparency. Its an inherent characteristic of raytraced shadows.

I also would recommend using the comment function in my blog for questions related to the tutorial.

Hope these help out! I'll be making more every week as well covering what i'm currently learning.

I will also take requests and hopefully process them into good tutorials.
