View Full Version : First Helicopter Animation
Hello everybody,
This is my first helicopter animation. Let me know what you think!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yjs_qcL7jx0
And I do notice the end of the rotor blades is a bit weird. I have no idea how that happened cause I just slowed it down, I didn't reverse it. Or is that realistic?
Regards and succes on future projects,

you'll need to model in a landing pad or something so that we can really see it fly..looks like you're off to a good start though

Yeah.. I should have.. However.. hes perfectly standing on the grid when he lifts off and when he lands.. so thats okey..
The thing i dont understand is why the rotor blades act so weird at the end..
i animated it really good..
heres how i animated the rotor blades..
Left = Frame. Right = Y-axis
0_0
50_-400
100_-800
150_-1600
200_-3200
250_-6400
300_-9600
350_-12800
400_-16000
450_-1600
500_-800
550_-400
600_0
Maybe I slowed it down too late??
tell me what you think...

Sorry, I'm not really that well versed on the program yet, I can only reply to it from a standpoint of being in the military and watching Helo's fly....that said, it does appear that you slowed it down to soon. In life if a helo dropped it's speed that quickly, it would have a hard landing. Also, getting back to the idea of a pad...if there was a defined ground with a different color it would help. In vietnam the pilots were always in a hurry, they would flair the tail to, as I understand it, get it down quicker..might want to see if there are any helo videos on google that show this...good luck.

That might be a visual problem, like when you see car wheels spining backwards even when the car goes forward. But besides that, I think you do have a problem and that you should interpolate those frames instead of keyframing so much. I think that chopper should fall from the sky if those blades stop spining so fast ! You should also try to anticipate a little, the animation is to straight forward !

hey man, the problem is that you reverse the rotation of the blades.. you go to -16000 in the y-axis, but they return to -1600... it should continue to go in the same direction (ie, the y-axis should continue to go into the negative..... so, instead of from -16000 to -1600, you need to go from -16000 to -17000... and so on..)
you just have to adjust the rate at which it goes into the negative to slow it down..
but other than that, I'd say wait a bit before lifting off.. once the propeller gets up to full speed, a chopper would still take a few seconds before lifting.. just a minor thing though..
hope this helps..

you also might want to check the animation curves - try linear tangents to avoid any "rubber band" effect of the blade... it'll be a little stiffer but would look more proper.
I've figured it all out. Thank you all so much for helping me with my problem!
