View Full Version : Problems with Skin Modifier and Painting Weights

I have applied my Skin modifier, and my model has muscles that do not fit within the Envelopes. It'd be sooo much easier if I could just Non-Uniform sca;e the envelopes, but NOOOO! We ain't allowed to.

Sooo, I have to resort to painting the weights in.
Problems started happening of course.

First off, when attempting to paint the weights, it always painted on the furthest away surface of the model, not on the closest side as it should do.

To get round this I flipped the normals so the model faced inwards. I can now paint the surface closest to me, but it's the inside of the surface, so I can't see the effect of the painted weights now.

I thought maybe this had to do with the Normals in Max5 so I checked use Legacy R4 normals, but this does nothing.

Can anyone Help.????
All i want is to be able to paint the normals on the correct surface. The painter seems to choose the opposite side of the surface than what it should do.

Cheers for your help.

Are you sure your mesh don't get flipped faces ? Try this. Anyway, before painting all your vertices, remember that the volume of your bones influence the default envelop of the skin modifier. And you can adjust each envelope (cross sections, lengh, etc..) before painting.

painting weights is much easier with a graphic pad then a mouse...

here's a good method,if you have a pad. On an arm for example select the whole arm and weight the whole thing %100 to the shoulder...it will all colapse and look jumbled. then change the weighting prefrence to the pressure of the pad and work down the arm. With a little pratice it's very fast.

No. the normals of my mesh are all okay. They either all point outwards, or inwards depending on if I flip them or not.

Enveloped don't seem to allow you to use for eaxample an oval shape. u can add cross sections, but that doesn't stop the cross sections still being Circular.
It would be great to be able to use splines for the cross sections. MAX however doesn't allow this.
Soo for triangular shaped muscles like those found in cats thighs, i can't just expand the size of the circular cross section because it then influences the belly, legs, and butt of the cat when I don't want it to.

So I have to resort to painting the weights.
Yes I have a graphics tablet a wacom. And I have tried using it for the pressure sensitivity.

All of this still doesn't overcome the problem (which must only be on my PC as none else seems to have had this problem) of the painting weights brush painting onto the wrong side of the surface.

Anyone know of this problem ever happening to someone else.?

not this particular problem. But I simply don't know how to make it work... I draw the brush around some verts but nothing is selected, nothing changes. Is this just a terrible plugin or what?

I don't know what the particular problem is in your scene, but i can tell you i don't have any problems with it at all. I paint/weight verts all the time in Skin (though i don't have a Wacom).
