View Full Version : Animation Mentor Rig: Cost?
Julez4001 04-10-2007, 04:25 PM How much would one charge to create an Animation Mentor (Maya) like rig in Messiah?
The waist ctrl have 2 modes - one that carry the upper body and one control that doesn't.

If the 2nd waist control was merely rotational it could very welll be alot like Chris Miraiffi's Rig (http://www.peachpit.com/bookstore/product.asp?isbn=0735713448&rl=1) from When I was at Full Sail.
He had a double back. One main control that controlled another spline kept the rig basically always in between feet.

Can you post a video of you using the rig? Most of us aren't in AM and don't have access to the rig. A few guys to hit up would be Maks, Suricate, and Ulven...

oooh... the evil of it!
I interpret Julez request to be one hip in hierarchy (rotate it and the chest swings around) and a second one out of hierarchy (move or rotate it and the chest stays where it is)
This is in the rig from Marek I posted and is a great way to animate.
Automatically between feet - ugh.

I guess I did not explain that correctly. As I am still noobious. :hmm:
But what dobermunk said is exactly how it works. The 1st initial back created has the controls hips rotation. Usually a set of rotational rings. Then there is a box icon around the hips, mid, chest. Where when you spin the hips it rotates(incrementally of the hips) mid, then chest. Basically expressions written to clusters along the spline to control the gradual rotation.
There was an additional expressions to keep the body in between the feet. But it wasn't the basis of the skeleton which was mainly the double back. - G

I'm not sure if you've had a look at the pirate monkey ninja rig I posted a while ago, but that had the feature as described here in it. It's spline IK layered on top of FK which enables you to move the top, middle and bottom of the spine independently. Something I learned from Marek's rig that dobermunk posted. Might be worth a look.

Hi lsddigital,

Sorry for OT, but is there a way to get AM maya rig?

If you mean the real rig then there is really only one option, join the school. Then you will get the added value of improving your animation, something the rig will not do for you on its own.
I really do not understand people fascination with getting one of the AM rigs. While they are really great to work with, there are tons of great rigs out there, especially for Maya.
Have you checked out Sergio from Strut Your Reel? Really nice rig. Fast and super poseable. They did a fantastico job.
Heh, I know it won`t make me the best animator on earth.
And I know there`s a lot of free rigs, I use them (Jason Schleifer`s "kitty", and PackageMan are my favorite).
BUT! AM rig is neutral. I mean the character, it`s look.
And I`m pretty sure the setup itself is great.
That`s why I`d love to get it, but I won`t cut myself if I won`t :)
I`d love to see how they do things, tho :)

Moom (http://www.highend3d.com/maya/downloads/character_rigs/MooM-version-3-4346.html) is very neutral.. if you donīt like the face, delete it.. and will look like the AM biped

Been kinda busy and finall;y got a moment to download the monkey rig.
Fantastic. Yes this is exactly what I am talking about.
2 Questions.
1. How much do you charge to rig a character like that?
2. Is there a tutorial or training material that is close to what you did in another app 9say Maya or LW) that could be transferred to messiah?
I havent seen the monkey rig or any of the AM rigs, but i assume they must be generic Rotational Control rigs with some Squash and Strech Controls on top.
This rigs are not dificult to make on programs like Messiah, Maya, XSi and the beauty of it is that the basic workflows to make those are very very similar between this 3 aplications.
Grab any GOOD Maya tutorials like the now old "Fast Animation Rigs" from Jason Schleifer DVD Tutorial and you can transfer all the info on it to Messiah, some things are even nicer and faster to setup in Messiah because of the After IK solver in the Expressions (if only XSi had this one  ....)
