I am confused about skin shaders and skin textures - please help

You either use a skin shader or paint textures right?

By using skin shader you get uniform colo right?

Can't you use a painted texture in such skin shader?

Someone please explain this,i don't understand how it goes?

I am not particuarly knowledgable about skin textures, however you can paint different textures for different layers of the skin shader (or so is my understanding). So you would have a colour diffuse map and various other maps for specular, bump and so on - and if you use SSS it gets a bit more complicated. Sorry i can't be of any mroe help - im sure there are tutorials floating around however...

the thing that i can help you in is that the best skin shader that i used is the miss_fast_Skin
form MR in maya 8.5
for te texture maybe a 2k for the head must be enouth and 2k for the whole body
U plug ur texture layer in the "Epidermal layer" and the "diffuse layer"
for the subdermal scatter layer you need the same texture but with a ornage color domination
and u can use them with those values

Is there a shader like this for Renderman too?

Does this shader work only with Mental Ray?

Yes there is an equivalent shader with MTOR , but why make things more complexe ? the mental fast_sss is excellent ! If you are using Renderman RFM the sss shader is cool too , but not better than the mental ray solution !

The MTOR solution will be more complexe , but you can find this shader easily in the default surface selection or import surface section ( i don't remeber exactly )

anyways the use of sss is not an obligation you can have good result with basic stuff likes blinn and clever compositing ! this will give you faster result . But i think that mental fast_sss is excellent for top/easy/fast result

Does anybody know how to use the Bump with this miss_fast_skin shader,
i tried putting a 2dBump and connect it to the texture and it creats small
darker dots but not a good looking bump....

should the bumpMap be bigger than 4k ???

and does anybody know what he means with :
"I used a Lambert shader with a Fresnel incandescence to simulate the peach-fuzz skin effect. This is connected to the Ambient slot in the Diffuse Layer of the shader. " ...???
