View Full Version : Next challenge?
Dann-O 04-10-2007, 12:40 AM Hey last two challenges did not go so well but I want to keep up the challenges. I think the wheeled vehicle challenge was great we had some excellent entries and the prehistoric sea creature one was pretty cool too.
1. So should we keep doing some challenges? I think so I woudl like to see some more entries.
2. Give an idea for the next challenge. I perfer broad based challenges that allow for more creativity.
My challenge idea.....Saturday morning Cartoon rejects.

I'm game. I'll go with Cartoon rejects.
As for some other ideas, abstract concepts are always good topics for creative interpretation; how about "balance" or "inside out"?

Well we can wait for a few more people to express their opinion. Broad subjects are fun. Wheeled vehicle challenge here was a sucess had some very nice entries. Did a general toon one before it was quite nice too. Balance and inside otu I am not comming up with pictures in my head right away. But I do think that they can be make for interesting interprtations.

I say go ahead and launch the challenge. Contests usually never take off right away, it takes time for things like these to catch on.
Challenges are great, they should always be going on. Sorry I haven't been able to participate lately, but I wanted to let you guys know I'm still around. I am still finishing up a bunch of other projects, and then will have time to do another challenge! Also, I'm really getting used to working in multiple packages for my projects. I keep finding more efficient ways of working, using each package for its strengths.
Wings3D's greatest strength is that it is a free version of a powerful tool. I think it's great that so many people can learn to model in it!
Anyhoo, I'm still around....

Every package has its strengths. I do end up using AC3D from time to time for those things Wings can't do well. Mostly things like path extrusions and single sided mesh stuff (sails tarps and even terrain) even the occasional lathe but end up using wings for about 90% of what I do. Don't have any high dollar packages like Maya or Max. Messiah is just rigging and rendering which it does fairly well.

I haven't done a challenge here before, but I like the idea of a more abstract theme. 'Balance' would be cool. I think more people could get into it.

I like the abstract theme suggested... "Balance"
I mean even a cube would do as an entry eh? So pretty much anybody of any skill level could get in on this topic....

An abstract theme like that well coudl be interesting. I am all for anything that will get additional people to join in. Ther eare peanty of wings users out there.

Did I read incorrectly, or isn't the current (cartoon rejects) challenge running until the END of may? I know I haven't finished yet, but figured I still have some time to go. Did something change?

Yes it is. I have not seen much interest. I am going to do a second entry more my style. actually too. Trying to bring Craig McKrackens style to 3D is not working for me. Sorry about the confusion.

I'd meant to get more time to work on this, but I have so many (non-cg) things sapping time right now, I never got to complete this.
I did get it about as far as I was going to take it in Wings, though. The additions (that aren't there) were going to be some wire/tube/hose type additions that I would have likely added in Blender (as they're easier to model as path extrusions rather than box modeling).
The only non-wings thing in this is the bristles on the brush - those are static particles in Blender.

I love it; can we see some wires?

how long is left on this challenge?.. and are you allowed to texture your models outside of wings, as you cant inside. or is there no texturing?

Well, first of all, you *can* texture inside wings.
#2 the cartoon challange ended on the first. At this time there is no challange --- but I expect 'Ballance' will be teh next topic of choice.
#3 No, no texturing, rendering, etc. outside of wings --- this is a modelling competition, not a comprehensive one. What's important are the wires.

Here are the wires for the individual pieces. It's easier to see than when they're all together. The tip of the toilet brush looks a little odd, as I only needed to model the base shape that I'd be using to generate the static particles.
