I just got an internship after sending out a demo reel, and I'd like to share the reel with the CG Talk community for critique. However, I'm in a bit of a snafu. Whenever I render out of premiere, my file is never less than 100 MB! Sometimes, I get 40 mb files but the quality is TERRIBLE. The thing is, I've downloaded reels from CGTalk members that were 40mb or less and still had great quality. I'm using sorenson video 3 in premiere and still getting these results! Anyone have ideas on how to export a quality movie with a decent file size?

Are you using export media or export movie?

In my experience rendering full sized files out of an editor to compression applications like sorenson squeeze, quicktime pro, or even virtualdub has yielded better results than in editor compressors.

I'm using export movie. I've never heard of those programs. Are they available for download online?

What settings are you using for Sorenson 3?

What size video are you outputting?

Sorenson3 is a very capable (if somewhat dated by today's standards) codec.

As for the apps:

virtual dub -> http://www.virtualdub.org/
Sorenson Squeeze -> http://www.sorensonmedia.com/
QuickTime Pro -> http://www.apple.com/quicktime/pro/

if needed, a brief guide to compressing video for the web (many out there) -> http://www.internetvideomag.com/Articles-2004/111804_VideoOnTheWeb.htm

remember, Google can be your friend :)

I agree with streameru; the sorenson3 codec still rocks socks. However, before you go off and try the compressors, try premiere's media export feature. It comes stock with internet download presets that aren't too bad at all.
