Just some tests and work progress for my Visual Effects Demo Reel. I'm trying to recreate one of the theories that explain how Moias (from Easter Island) where raised...there will be 4 shots. First shot (not shown) to establish the location, 2 with natives pulling, and the last one the guys raisin the statue.

The background pictures I had to take them near Kamloops, BC. But I once visited Easter Island...and I think they work ok... :p

Any critics will be welcome!!! :bounce:

I don't know if it's an encoding issue, but your ropes seem to pop sometimes. I don't mean the tensioning and slackening, but popping.

Also, it would be nice to have a slight bit of movement in the timbers tied to the statue. Nothing that makes it look fragile, but something that makes it recognize that it just hit the next log on the ground or something.

And, this may also be an encoding issue, but your camera move seems to move in tiny steps at times rather than a smooth move.

Otherwise, I think this is really starting to look good. Kind of creepy how it looks like the ground itself is pulling the statue along, haha, but I know some people will be there later.

Good job!

Is funny to write having you almost beside me...but anyway. Almost everything what you said is right...I am working on them. Details that would give a very nice overall look to the shot.

wow! that all i have to say! Yes i see the poping but that is fixable! other than that WOW! im not sure why allot of ppl have not seen this post but I give you 4

other than that! is this a project for a company? if not where do you get the mocaps for Maya! is there a place I can get some, if you know? the thing is not allot of Schools teach Mocap and I would like to learn to use it! and with that thought! if you have Tutorials or post tutorials that would be Nice to share with the CGTalk Community! well Great JOB!

Yes the pop is fixable. It is in my 300 pages to do list :buttrock: to finish this Reel. But before I have to get the grass working with those rollings logs. I have the natives pulling done, so is a matter off get them into the scene and get those ropes work with them.

It is for my Demo reel. I'm now in VFS and there I got the Maya Mocap (the pulling is mine :) ) . There is some files to compile and some Mel but is very easy and straight foward thing to do. The skelletom is very simple but you can play a little with it.

The school realy doesn't teach Mocap...It was just a need for my proyect and I had to work with it...as other guys had to lear more Cloth, Particles, etc. With Vfx reels is a proyect basis learning.

"not sure why allot of ppl have not seen this post " I realy don't now...:hmm:

Thanks again!!!

Wow! Nice stuff! How did I know that you are from VFS??
How long do you have till this is completed? Are there going to be massive teams of natives pulling? I agree with baglunch, you should have some movement in the load to indicate the bumpy terrain. But hey, this is a WIP. And vfx projects are always a learning experience!

Looks great so far...can't wait to see it done!

The bumpy terrain is in my list...

Zoetrope check out the presentation one month ago. There some stuff that I haven't put together in the last shot...like the pulling...

5 more weeks!!!:wip: :buttrock:

Thanks for the C&C!!!

Working now in that pulling crowd simulation:

Pulling test 4.1 Mb Divx (http://www.vfs.com/~felipev/Te_Tokanga/Tests/pulling.avi)

Click here (http://www.vfs.com/~felipev/Te_Tokanga/Natives/nativos_2.jpg) to see some of the simple texture apply to the Natives. I paint using some Easter Island real trival body paint. For the same model I am using 6 blend shapes to get some body diferences for the crowd simulation.

I think there aren't enough types of pulling animations to make this look non-CG. I don't think you'll be able to de-CG it with just offsetting timings... but you never know.

Also, you should replace one of the people towards the back with Charlie Brown or a Smurf. And then put my name in the credits.

Thanks.

Yea...I was working on a theird one today, but don't know. Is not just the Offsetting...the old duplicate and scale X -1 for the left handded natives. That would make 6 different pulling clips. And with the camera angle for that shot you just realy see the first row of guys...all the other is just visual noise...

You should have shown us the final camera angle then.

Ha!

It would be cool if you modeled each of the natives to look like 80s television stars, but textured them like Easter Island natives... like Gary Coleman, JJ from Good Times, Balki, etc.

I realy like the letter box style...almost a documentary:p Ja, Ja!!!

There is no color correction yet. Still working on a lot of details:D

First of all, your avatar drives me insane. AAAAAHHH! Make him stand still! Is he mocking me? Is he flirting with me? I don't know!

The animation looks much better, but you have a curious roll happening on your cross pieces, but no apparent corresponding sway on the upright timbers.

And the little guys don't seem to be pulling in synch with the tensioning of the ropes.

And watch the feet of your "jogger" slipping on the ground as he comes closer.

And the people on top of the statue are, well.... what ARE they doing? One is pretending to be C-3PO, and the other is... commisserating?

Careful of the shimmer on your timbers. heh. shimmer my timbers. heh.

The wood timbers in the background look like scorch marks rather than logs.

....but this keeps looking better with each update. Good job. Glad to be able to make picky detail crits rather than "where are the people?" crits.

And, the couple strolling along on the upper right seem abnormally large compared to the guys pulling furthest away.

That is all.

Thanks...I added a couple more things to my already huge list of things to "fix":D

I like the C3PO guy over there...it is just to give a mistery touch to the shot.

Are we having party tomorrow?

manutara, wow! Thanks for the update! Things are really coming together & are looking great! I'd have to agree with baglunch on much of what he said. Particularily the load being pulled. It's movement is much too smooth - although I'm sure you are about to get to this! But think about the rough terrain, & then the oddly shaped, knobby logs that are taking the weight, not to mention the irregular bottom of the load - logs & rope & such. And have you thought about the logs as they come out from under the load? They've probably gotten smooshed into the ground a bit, & probably spin & pop up abit as the load is pulled off of them. But again, these are probably things you have yet to add :D
Keep it coming!!

Zoetrope: Thank for all the C&C. The weight...is one off those things that nobody agrees, everybody has a different opininon. Personally I think that the Momentum is so High that this huge guy will have a kind of constant and smooth movement...but...realy hard to say.

Now is time to work on Shot 1, the establishing shot for the Demo Reel.

I want to Track some live Plates filmed some months ago. If those plates are not good enough...pictures will be the answer.

This pictures are originaly 2500x700, to make the camara pan right. Working on them:
