hi does anyone know where i can get a plug in that will turn a render into a sketch??? Something that looks like it was drawn.

Not sure if you have Max 5 or not but

I thought Max 5 came with something called ink and paint. Just for that reason

the best plugin for this projects is "Illustrate" but it is a commrecial plugin but Try its demo for 30 days free .
( cartoony render or lines such as render into a sketch)
search it here : www.maxplugins.de ( for commrecial plugins)

yes illustrate is great ..

ink paint ??.. i think it only render cartoon scenes..it's not a renderer i think..it's a material..& i don't think it support sketch render.

I did see some pictures using it though.. the result was pretty "sketchy" to me but I'll take you're word

astral : i checked the 3ds max 5 user reference..
yes it's a material.. & yes you can -by changing some parameters- get a sketchy result .. i was wrong,, sorry

Howdy !

the fact that Ink n'Paint is a shader does not mean you can only use as a "cartoon/cell" rendering feature.
I'm quite sure that with a little tweak and imagination it might be able to render maybe cross hatching effects or hand drawn style.
Using simple noisy/blurred maps (for exemple) should bring some nice effects, now i'm not saying that it might be what you're looking for, but it's probably worth trying.

Reyes Ingrafica has a renderer called NPR (Non-Photorealistic Renderer) that does what you need I think. It allows you to render out in a variety of artist styles like what Painter does to 2D images. But it is also commercial.
