View Full Version : digital painting.. to black and white or not???
ricefarmer 04-06-2007, 11:07 PM i notice the most realistic of skintones and digital paintings from artist start out with their black and white tones first... is this the best way to do digital painting??? or just easier for more realistic lighting....
of course people like enayla dont use it i think she just puts color on right away and figure the lighting through the colors....
which is the standard? which is a better technique over all???
thx

In traditional art schools, the students usually start with B&W drawing, and this may last for a few years, till they move over to colour.
Our brain is carried away by colour, so the point is to be able to reproduce colour values and depth through the use of just a grayscale image. Then, once this is mastered are they "ready " to move on to colour.
And one of the first colour sessions, would be to paint a white object, on a white tablecloth and a white bg, with the restriction of not using a single dab of white paint:).
If your question refers to realistic interpretation, then, b&w to clour might be the way.
But if you use painting more expressively, you will find that in each "skin" tone, lie a whole spectrum of vivid colours, greens, blues etc, which when applied "correctly" will give a vibrant yet realistic result.
I'd say, try both methods, and find out, what works best for you.
