I'm sure this has been discussed before, but...

Has anyone actually managed to close after effects on completion of a reasonable-sized job without it actually crashing?

It's amazing that eeveryone I know just, well, expects AE to crash when they close it down. Unbelievable there's no fix for this.

Wondering also if this has been solved in the new version.

Sure. I experienced quite the opposite, it did happened that AE crashed when shutting down, but in a very few occasions.

What hardware, which OS and which version are you talking about?

Be more specific. There are only two typical scenarios that can regularly crash AE 7 on a PC:

a) OpenGL problems with your graphics card - AE is unable to clean out its texture buffer and crashes

b) Disk cache problems due to poor disk performance (too slow, too fragmented, too full)

Both factors are entirely up to the environment you are running AE and can be resolved by taking some time to bring your system up to snuff. If you're on a intel Mac, that's an entirely different story, but there is no way to resolve those issues due to AE 7 not being natively XCoded and Apple's still crappy OpenGL implementation.

wow!

I'm runniong a AMD 280 quad Boxx system, XP, 4GB ram, GForce 7900GTX. AE7.

Although to be honest - this happens on any system we work on here, with varying specs.

Thought it was generally accepted to be honest.

Strange. I'm working with AE since v4 and much weaker rigs than yours, on MAC and PC, running into a variety of problems, mostly memory related, but shutting down always worked apart from a very few occasions, maybe 4 or 5, in all that years.

Same here...
Been working with it for 2 years now.
Crashes a few times a day. Keeping your project 'clean' helps.
Just love the 'one chance only save option' when it crashes.

Only problem that is truly annoying is when a project file get corrupt.
Auto-save is your best friend at that moment.
