Title: hateful draft
Name: James Wolf Strehle
Country: USA
Software: Photoshop
I was commissioned off a piece I created earlier called bad eye, the client wanted to add to the piece to fit his comic book, I went through many variations, this is one of them. I'm glad I was asked to refine my earlier piece because I never felt it was finished and now I was forced back into it and I now have an infinitely better version! It was created in photoshop I had fun creating the skin, so much in fact that I'm working on another face thats going to have as much detail as I can possibly jam in. I had some trouble choosing the cropping because I wanted to be close enough to see all the work I did on the skin but far enough away that you could see the hair and such. I hope it looks alright. I of course would love to hear any and all comments! let me know what you think!

Thanks for the comments everyone! now I'm really glad I went back into the piece, maybe I should revive some more old pieces. wow so your eye looked like that alonsito, it would've been a nice reference:) I came up with the flies around the eyes from a day at the lake, there were a bunch of dead carp floating up to shore and my dad called me over and was like "if you wanna paint something really scary, try painting that!" and he pointed to a huge bloated fish with flies all over it...I gagged, but that wasn't the end of it. I heard the girls on the beach yelling "gross, get that out of here...your a man get rid of it" I turned around to see all of the other males fleeing from the beach and I gave a mighty sigh... so I had to tie a rope around it and swim it out to the middle of the lake for the current to take it downward to the swamp area, all the while grumbling like samity sam. after this greatest of tragedies, I vowed never to forget this day! so I Immortalized the memory in a painting! so to you it may just be a creepy pic, but to me it will always be a stinky bloated fish water skiing 5 feet behind me.

thanks! I'm glad I was successful in my attempt. I wanted to make it disturbing without completely going overboard. I think adding things like flies are far more effective than bloody gashes and such. sometimes the small details that you don't normally notice have the most powerful effect. anyway thanks again.

the textiles and details are great. my only crit is about the bugs. you'd think they'd be flies but they dont have wings, they look like very, very tiny beetles, almost too small to be real, unless they were ants or something. its beautiful though

Great! go for it, going back into old peices can be so much fun cause you have a refreshed mind and can bring so much more to the piece. sometimes a piece just hits a dead end and you have to step back for a while until you get another spark and can start it up again.

One of the most striking portraits I have ever seen! Unbelievable detail - how frightfully gorgeous she is. The crop you've used is just right in my opinion. Love the transparency & texture of the veil.

I definitely like the decrepit look of the area in question...The different skin tones definitely speak of nasty muckety muck. Reminds me of my days on the acreage....dogs + raccoons = disaster...and flies...oh the flies.
Very nice work overall....5*

Why are the flies so tiny? My eyes have a difficult time taking this image seriously with this dramatic scale contrast...her head would have to be, like, 5 feet tall!
jameswolf
04-22-2007, 01:35 AM
What sort of Flies are inhabiting your life. these flies are quite proportionate for a common house fly, unless the flies in my area are overly conscious of their weight, which I don't think they are because thats ridiculous! theres plenty of feces in Boston. based off the scale of the two I'd say the head is closer to 9 inches (an average head) than 5 feet, but I respect your crit and thank you for the comment :)

What I find most striking are the multiple levels of contrast. She is beautiful yet repulsive. She looks angry and sad at the same time. The mood of the image is "dark" yet her face has a strong light on it. Her beauty is protected behind a veil while her curse is unprotected from the flies. At the most basic level, it hurts to look at her but you want to look... and keep looking.
I don't know if it was your intention to create the contrasts but I think this is what makes the image so compelling. It pulls you in and pushes you away at the same time. Brilliant.
jameswolf
04-23-2007, 02:58 PM
I appreciate your comment Graphicdragon, thank you. It was my intention to create the contrasts of the beauty in the face and grotesque qualities of the eye, the other contrasts weren't intentional in the beginning but sort of created themselves as I progressed through the painting.

I don't know how many times I have looked at this painting and had nothing to say because I had not been painting for very long. Now that I have I realize how much brush detail is actually in this painting. From what I see in order to get that skin color you had to paint then glaze paint then glaze change brushes paint then glaze. I am assuming some blending modes were used such as color dodge and burn for some of the blotches around the eyes. From looking at this it reminds me of a person making a sword. Folding it over and over. I see how you built the wrinkles around the eyes with browns purples, greens and yellows. The silk mask is just amazing as well. I think you used a custom brush to create the lines. I bet it was hard covering up her mouth after you put all of that detail into it.
If I am wrong on some of my critiques it is do to my beginning understanding of photoshop and how to use its elements.

Wow I really appreciate both of your comments! Thanks so much. yes it did take a lot of work Nwags, surprisingly though it didn't take nearly as long as some of my older pieces. things obviously get faster and easier as you continually learn. I try not to use to many blending modes as it can get pretty complicated when I start merging things, mostly its dealing with opacities. for the veil, what i did was drew a line and duplicated, merged the two layers, duplicate, all the time moving the copied layers downwards, occasionally drawing a new line to fit the surfaces, I certainly could have used a custom brush but foolishly didn't lol. I just felt i had more control doing it manually. then over top i drew in the threads that would shine. Yes it certainly can be difficult covering up something you worked very hard on, but you just need to keep it in you mind the whole time that its going to be covered up, if you don't you may stray away from your original concept and lose site of what you were going for. anyway thanks for all the great comments everyone! and i'm glad i made you happy "thesquid" :)
