Hi guys,

I've been given a project to do at work and thought I would do something different. Nothing really that advanced 3D wise but there is some issues which I thought some people might be able to start me on as a point of ref. I'm not really a power user of Maya (just started on 8 from 6.5), I know my way around but never done anything like this before.

The company bought a bunch of Xtreme sport shots and want to composite their logo in there for some product stuff and I thought I would have a crack at compositing a Photorealistic 3D version of their logo in there. Can anyone help?

These are the steps I think I would take:
1. Work out how to match the camera angle in the supplied image to get the right perspective
2. Create a lighting system that matches the light angle in the photo shadows and falloff
3. Build any elements which will require a shadow to fall on from the logo
4. HDRI?
5. Render to passes to manage in Photoshop

If anyone has any URL tutorials on similar or related sections of this project for photorealistic compositing in a situiation similar I would really like to hear. Or simply some comments on my list ...Thanks for any help!

Regards,
nick.

Have you ever done any digital compositing work before? If not, then its gonna take some work. It would take a while to explain how to do it, but to be simple, Ill spell out what renders you are gonna need to use to get the best results. Its how they render cg elements in movies. You are gonna Need an Ambient Occlusion render, A Global Illumination render, An RGB render, A shadow render, A Diffuse render, A Specular render, A reflection render, And Also are probably gonna want to Render out an Hmatte too. These are just the most basic ones, most movies and high end stuff make multiple renders of each, but these are starting points for it. There are even certain blending modes and stuff for each that are used in photoshop/after effects to make things easier. Oh, also, you are gonna want to camera match your Text to fit the scene. I dont know about maya, but max has a tutorial about it in the help files. Camera matching is pritty simple, its just taking an object that you already know the dimensions of, making a 3d copy, real rough, like a box or something, and then setting up points on the picture and the box so that the camera will automatically align itself to fit the dimensions. These are some things that you can look up and probably find some good info on it. Good luck.
