Title: Henry Lee
Name: Theodor Groeneboom
Country: Norway
Software: 3ds max, Digital Fusion, mental ray, ZBrush

"We always knew we could trust Henry,- he was a good man and a solid worker, but he always gave us the chills, like as if he had a secret. But then again, didn't we all?"

After watching the first season of Carnivale, the look and feel
of the series intrigued me and i tried to create some of the same atmosphere and a character that would fit-in in the Carnivale universe.

It's been a while since i posted anything, so...
I started working on this model back in January, but havn't had the time to complete the project until now. I originally intended to do a cinematic animation with him, giving im a small monologue with some Tom Waitsish musicscore. The head is rigged and ready for animation but i have encountered many problems when dealing with displacements and 3d hair/fur :) So i don't think i'll be completing the animation anytime soon.
The bottom pictures are various versions of the model as i had i hard time choosing the final look of things.

Polymodeled in max, around 1600 polys and about 2mill when fully rendered with displacements. Detailing in zbrush, rig & render in max/mental ray finally compositing done in Fusion5.

Hope you'll enjoy this image , thanks for your time :)

Very nice, but I find that double reflection in his eyes distracting, it seems to take away the life of him by making your fill light obvious with its 'phong'.
Really nice zbrush work. I've just started learning it myself.

I'm a big fan of Carnivale also!
It's so much different than everything else.

It's also got the LMFAP(little man from another place) from Twin Peaks (aka-Samson in Carnivale), and I'm a big David Lynch fan, which is what attracted me to Carnivale initially.

I don't get HBO anymore, so I haven't seen it in awhile though.

Good job on the modeling, but I 2nd the double reflection in the eyes revealing the fill light.

The image reflect a character personality which is hard to do.
Can'nt understand what the small vartions in the bottom are for. It's distracting from the main image.
Keep it up, good work.

Thanks for the comments guys,

I've had second thoughts about the reflections in the eyes aswell , thanks for pointing that out, i'll change it when time permits :)

I left the smaller images in the big one because i had a hard time choosing what would be considered the "final image" and final look.

Again, thanks :)

looking really good the0! it`s been fun to watch your progress on this one, from the first renders to the final ones.
i have to agree with some of the others though, especially about those reflections in the eyes. they seem a bit too "overkill", and that shadow on his nose might look a bit sharp too?

anyways, keep up the good work man!

I also agree about the shadow and reflection. I love the lighting and texturing though. Top notch work and very well done.

Great, but the eyes seems to reflect another environment and not the place where the character is!!
Great skin and great shader!!

This is a super job! Good on you mate :)

No real crits. Reflections has been mentioned, but I don't think it steals from the final result.

Keep it up :D

Hey gboom!

I think this turned out really nice. Both modelling-wise, texturing and shading wise. Very profesionnaly executed. what about some wires?
I know you have a rig for this guy and would love to see some movement. What about posting some of your test anims?

Lots of love
