I am having trouble with a project that I am working on... I can't seem to get the look that I want to create. I got inspiration from a web site and I can't seem to get my project to "build" itself like this here.

If anyone has any pointers on how they would approach this project I would greatly appreciate it! I think I got myself in over my head with my skill level but I really want to accomplish something like this!

Setting this up shouldn't be a problem, the hard part will be making it look good.

Each screen being revealed should be a preComp, if it's animated, or maybe a rendered out movie of an animation (to save processing power). Each of these will have a mask on it.

Build 15 or so of these screens (duplicates should be fine) and arrange them in AE's 3d space. Projects like this definitely reveal the weaknesses of AE's 3d camera, but do your best to navigate the space.

Build rooms - all 90 degree angles. Think of it as one semi-deconstructed building.

Then start spinning it, or your camera, around. Either works fine. I'd use the camera, but if you'd like to parent all of the screens to a null and spin that in 3d space, you'll get similar results.

Work out a couple cool camera moves, then go in and start to animate your masks, revealing the screens.

Don't try to figure out moves and reveals at the same time, it'll fry your brain.

Cheers.

It's actually pretty simple. Like Barry said, build the buildup of the various pages as separate comps, then stack them in 3D space in your main comp. Just don't try to do everything at once. Either focus on the timing of the buildup first or arrange and animate your 3D space, then proceed to the next step.

Thank you for all of the great advice! The project is coming along so far so good. I broke down each comp into layers in photoshop so that I can reveal random sections of each comp using masks. I set up all my comps at 90 degree angles and worked out a neat smooth camera track. (thanx barrymcw (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=228382)) Hopefully I can achieve a cool "building" look as long as my keyframes and such are timed just right. It's only going to be 10 seconds long so it should move pretty fast.
