I've posted this on the modelling forum but haven't really gotten an answer, I hope somebody here will

I'm modelling a Japanese farmhouse for an animation and I basically have everything except for the straw roof. I tried using an image map for the texture but it just doesn't look right since the shadows give it away. How can I model a straw roof that is also not so taxing on my system? Or is there a way to use an image map and fake the shadows?

basically here's what I want to do:

look at the cottage pictures, I think it's done in MAX, how can I do this in Maya.

cheers,

You'll have to do some very creative texturing work, but you probably already know that. Basically there is going to need to be an Alpha applied that will make those shadows and the edge of the straw like that. Look it up in your docs on how to connect it. You'll have to manually go in the connection editor and connect the out alpha channel to the color RGB channel on your texture. It's not too hard once you've done it a few times, you'll get used to it.
