CGTalk - lost manipulator tool

HI i have 4.5 and i was working in polys modling i tried to extude two sides of the cube and all i got was four dots in the center of the edge of the faces. i did not see my manipulator tool . i tried everything i could think of.. can some please point me in the right direction to get the manipulator tool back.

Have you tried Modify>Center Pivot?
Sometimes the manipulator tool goes lost in 3D space, because the pivot is off big time.
By centering the pivot you'll get the manipulator back close(center) to the object you are editing.

also you want to check to make sure your caps lock is turned off...that will disable any hotkeys you try. Also....maybe by accident you shrunk the tool size. Push + or - to make that manipulator handle bigger and smaller. Is your toolbox still up? Did you click on the icon and center pivot?

I tried center pivot and it didn’t work I got a warning saying:

Cannot use xform command flag center pivots to modify components

I did check the tool size will double ck the caps lock I think its off but I might have hit it by accident I’ll ck that.

I did double click on the manipulator tool and when I did that it said there are no tool settings for this tool.

Thanks for the help if there are any other ways you can think of to point me in the right direction to get the manipulator tool back please let me know I appreciate it:)

Try this. . . .

make your selection. . .
then go modify-transformation tools-show manipulator

Seems if you haven't your manipulator is because your history is off, try to turn your history on

Thanks guys i'll keep those in mind if it happens agin ...i ended up just reinstalling it because i have a time limit on my proj with school. Thanks for the advice :beer:

I have this happen all the time....
It is due to your userpref.mel getting corrupted....!!!!!

I keep a backup at all times now.
you need to go into your maya folder inside your documents

C:\Documents and Settings\your name\My Documents\maya\4.5\prefs

Usually set up as above...

delete the userprefs.mel and see if that works next time...
backup your maya folder in that location in case it happens again..
