hi everyone
i was working on a composite still frame ,live character(foregroung) on cg location(background), and came across something i couldn't achieve and now i want to know how to makr it
when i came to foreground edge treatment I wanted to blur the edges of the character, so i used a edge blur filter, what it did is a constant bluring along edges, so when i adjust it so that edge around the head looks ok , it looks much blurred at arms and shoes. so how can i apply edge bluring in a controlable manner so that i control the blurriness at distinct parts of the foreground?
what i did for the project, since it was just a still, is making two layers with 2 settings and masked between them however i beleive this is not the clean way for making it, what if it was a footage sequence? how do you reach clean edge quality?
i need tips for getting quality edges

p.s. i use aftereffects

Can't remember how exactly in after effects, but in combustion it was "compound_blur" & in fusion you'd want to use the "effects_mask" of your blur operator.

I would assume most compositing apps nowadays would have the abilty to control any operator via another input (ie -it's luminance, R,G,B,A,Z).

For what you're doing you'd likely create a ramp (from black to white) for the character you're blurring & use the ramp to control what areas get blurred more and what areas get blurred less.

Make sense?

There are other factors to consider though. You might have to animate the ramp, depends on the shot.
