PaulHellard 04-04-2007, 10:13 AM Hi there,
Late last year Max Kor submitted this amazing image to CGTalk, and, being a busy man, has only just had time to send CGSociety the tutorial we all sorely wanted to see.

Hats off to you mate this has got to be one of the best cgi humanoid images I have ever seen. I am a big fan of blizzard entertainment’s work as well and this image really captures the feel of the warcraft world. Great tutorial I found it really helpful.

Can you respond some questions Please?
How long did it take to you from start to end?
Are you doing this just for hobby? or do you work in the industry? or do you still a programer?
What resolution the textures are?
How the Hair was done?
Thanks in advance.
Great work really impresive :buttrock:

That's one of the most realistic faces I've ever seen. At first, I thought it was a picture of a girl that somebody photoshop'd up a bit. That's freaking scary real! Just think. In 20 years (or less) the games will have that level of realism in them.

Beautiful work and very generously tutorial!:bowdown:
Thank you people ! It feels strange to see this thing again on the front page
only wish he had went a lil more on the teeth
the teeth use almost the same sss material as the eyes
what's important is a good bump map and a fair amount of sss - nothing special
would he share the bump textures or explaining how to make them ?
sorry i can't share the bump map, i'll have to make a good tutorial for making
it because it's such an important issue, the main thing that it's important
not to "make stuff up" and really look at some reference when you are making
the bump map, especially for the lips.
What specs are you on? how long did this beuty take to render?
I don't remember exactly, about 45 min for 900 x 626 and
about 16 hours for 1600 x 1078 on P4 3.2 GHz 1000 ram
How long did it take to you from start to end?
just the face - about 2 weeks maybe even a month - it was very long time ago
the rest about a week - I worked on it at evenings after my main job, so it's hard to tell
exactly.
Are you doing this just for hobby? or do you work in the industry? or do you still a programer?
I do work in the industry (on very small projects that come along ), but some of my projects do involve programming for scripts, pluggins etc.
What resolution the textures are?
the final resolution that I planned for was about 1024 x 768 (i have a small monitor),
so the biggest res textures were about 2000 x 2000
How the Hair was done?
there is a little maya fur on top and the rest are polygons with textures
it was a very bad way of doing it though - useless for animation
hey Matan, say hi to everyone at snowball for me :D

Hey Mkor, absolutely gorgeous stuff, this is really nice.
I read your notes on the eye tuts, what is the dark grey part, is it a third part ?
I mean you have outer shell+ inner shell +third modeled dark grey part (opaque iris pic?)
Thx so much for sharing your art and specs :-)
Keep it up :-)

A really great model you've created. The renders are awesome!
And I especially like the way you've managed to create life in her eyes.
Very well done indeed!

My GOD, man. That's one of the most believable CG characters I've ever seen to date.
How much time did you take to produce it?

Beautiful work you've done again max! The bump map is really amazing. However, this really isn't a tutorial, but more like a project overview. Shrug.

Hello!!
VERY BEAUTIFUL IMAGE!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!
I fact is just ANOTHER photo-realistic stuff. GREAT POSTER ART!!
GREAT modelling/scene management skills. I haven't seen the texture yet, so I guess its just great Photoshop manipulation skills too. But the artistic value of this image is very close to 0 because it looks like a sexy girl with a decent movie makeup to the untrained eye. Besides it brings no new concepts. Medieval sexy girls are a subject for heavy-metal artists since the '80s and we are in the 2007.
Personally, I feel that the image is a composition from scratch...a female head from the personal library+ some photoshop compositing and layer effects and voila..lets post it to the cgsociety forums.
So. For the GREAT composition and lighting and photoshop skills and because of the lack of imagination and artistic novelty whatsoever... i can only give a 3 stars.
There are greater compositions who really deserve awards and more stars.
KEEP UP!

And Almansur my friend, you should get a star for being very clueless yet ignorant, about how you judge peoples work.
"female head from the personal library+ some photoshop compositing and layer effects and voila"
Lol what?? "voila?? you absolutely have no idea how freaking hard it is to even achieve such a lifelike character, all the research and patience, it takes just near a lvl like this. And all you can say is "voila? as if it was merely a small task that anyone could pull off, with their left hand? (actually im lefthanded)
"Medieval sexy girls are a subject for heavy-metal artists since the '80s and we are in the 2007."
Apart from thinking that World of Warcraft and Lord of The Rings, are all titles from year 2000+, im actually having a hard time figuring out what your trying to say here. Did you also hate LoTR cause it was so 80'ies? lol
Just to give you a little clue how fare out your facts are cluding your point system, I can tell you that there are 5 star nominated artists out there, who are impressed with this picture.
I can't say that your wrong in your opinion cause your entitled to it, but what I can do tho, is to let you know, that your clearly one of the few who aren't impressed with this picture. And thats probably cause you do not have much knowledge, when it comes to the process of creating a 3d lifelike picture.

"But the artistic value of this image is very close to 0 because it looks like a sexy girl with a decent movie makeup to the untrained eye."
...now i have heard it all.....
Almansur...ah,never mind...forget it
P.S i have to admit though, the fact that a few thousand members of CGS have untrained eyes is an impressive fact...anyway....

Poor Almansur. He thinks his stars worth a damn.
By the way Max, did you use any human reference for her face? She is so beautiful! It's almost impossible to think that she is created from scratch!
Cheers!

Great tut and beautyfull image..Really great work.
Can you share any more info? ie. are there any lights in the scene, GI/FG settings?
Also you say you use a lambert with a Fresnel incandescence more info on that would be really great.
Thanks again.

Hi,
do you have any more info on the general lighting setup? Where you using FG abd HDRI for the main lighting? Did you have to do much seperate lighting linking, i know you mentioned some seperate spec lights for the eye highlights.
Cheers,
Dan.
I read your notes on the eye tuts, what is the dark grey part, is it a third part ?
I mean you have outer shell+ inner shell +third modeled dark grey part (opaque iris pic?)
There are only 2 objects: outer shell + inner lens with a transparent front and opaque
back (iris pic) that's the dark grey pupil - a texture.
did you use any human reference for her face?..
I looked at many photographs just to make the face anatomy more or less correct,
after that I just moved her eyes, nose, lips and chin till I liked it.
The textures are made from scratch, but i did look at photographs to understand
what has to be there.
Can you share any more info? ie. are there any lights in the scene, GI/FG settings?
Also you say you use a lambert with a Fresnel incandescence more info on that would be really great.
there is a light spot for the fur on top of her head, as for the rest of the scene - it's FG only.
the settings of FG would not give you much - it's a very scene/scale specific thing.
The lambert with a Fresnel incandescence is connected to miss fast's ambient slot
to simulate the peachfuzz. The lambert is completely black - except for its borders (Fresnel)
where it shows a texture with small hairs(noise).
do you have any more info on the general lighting setup? Where you using FG abd HDRI for the main lighting? Did you have to do much seperate lighting linking, i know you mentioned some seperate spec lights for the eye highlights.
the lighting is a very simple FG setup. There is a sphere around all the scene with a ramp texture that gives the overall lighting. The only separate light linking is one spot light
that is linked to a fur on top of her head and unlinked from everything else in the scene.
What I meant by separate spec lights for the eye highlights is that I made some small
objects in front of her face that had a material so bright - they emitted light with FG on.
That made a sort of a key light effect on very reflective objects - like eyes, but not much
effect on objects with blurred reflection - like her face.
Most of the metallic parts had a texture in their mentalray environment shader that makes them reflect an environment that is not really there plus the objects that do exist in the scene.

Love the image, great work. I was stunned as I initially thought it was a real photo. The only give-away is the ears, they're a tiny bit off (extremely tiny bit) I am liking your tutorial, but I have one question to the others on the board: You mention the SSS materials, forgive me if it's totally ignorant of me, but are those part of Maya, or are they a seperate set of materials?
I'd like to give it a shot...
Thanks

I'm sure he is very, very concerned about your over important stars! God forbid someone who is trying to just draw a portrait, quick guys, it's our duties as 3D Artists to portrait completely original and complete creative, epic scenes. I can imagine this guy some hundred years ago going to Da Vinci and complaining about Mona Lisa asking "but... where is all the blood? And the details in the background? This is just a woman!"
