View Full Version : applying Misss Fast Skin to selected faces ???

I am trying to apply the Misss Fast Skin shader to individual faces, but only certain faces are working. The legs are seperate meshes from the bodies, so they worked, but the whole upper torso is all one mesh and that is the one that is having problems. Only the ears and the chest seem to use the shader, whereas the rest of the torso uses the deafault lambert i had on it originally.
even if i select the whole upper body and apply the shader, the same thing occurs, however with the shirt now affected. The arms and head dont want to cooperate...
Would my UVs be doing this since I have not layed them out? (I wouldn't think so, but who knows at this point)
I looked up the Misss Tests forum and found a possible solution on pg 44, however adjusting the light linking mode didnt seem to do anything, and setting it to 2, only made my geometry turn black.
(EDIT) oh, and i dont know if this has anything to do with it, but i created / edited the shader in another file, then imported it into this one.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is it possible that the surface normals are going the wrong way for the parts that are not working? They must all face out.

sure your lightmap is still connected to the SG? also make sure you have an actual lightsource in the scene, not just the default light.
cheers

(otherwise the lightlinking mode like you mentioned, try 0,1 and 2 if you havnt tried each one allready)

okay, aparently the normals werent all facing out for the chest -- so i conformed, then reversed, and that seemed to work, however, the head did not seem to be affected O_o
considering the head is apart of the upper torso, when i conformed then reversed all the normals, they should all be facing outward (or at the very least inward), but only the chest/arms seem to work.
if you notice before, parts of the ears were working, but now, none of the head is working... i'm not sure what is going on, but i think the normals are the problem. though, what else can i really do to the face normals other than conform / reverse ???

My connections seem fine. And i've tried changing the light link mode, but it either made no difference, made my geometry dark grey, or omitted my geometry from rendering.
I can upload the scene file if anyone is interested in looking at it -- otherwise, I appreciate the help. Thanks for the input so far :)
ps. I'm using 3 directional lights

here's a close up of the low-res --- i even duplicated the head faces and tried adjusting it like that, but i keep getting the same thing :(

i think sss shaders dont work well with objects that have open geometry, or holes. im pretty sure this is a known issue. i would seperate the peices you want to be skin and fill / bridge all the geometry gaps and holes.

okay, i opened the scene fresh, then remade the shader -- applied it, and voila. I did this already once before and it work too, but then i tried it one more time, and I got the same problem as before. So I figured something is wrong with my connections or faces.
anywho, this time around, i filled in the faces of the duplicated head and applied the new miss fast skin shader -- and it worked. i then applied it to the original head, with holes, and it worked also O_o
the only thing weird at this point was having to reverse the normals of the ears as opposed to the rest of the head in-order for the shader to work properly (i guess conforming wasnt doing the trick?)
i'm not really sure what the problem was -- prolly importing the shader rather than making it, and the face normals of my model not all pointing consistently outward (well, the ears at least). assuming importing was a part of the problem, would something like this happen when i import my character into another scene???
anyone else experience problems importing characters with the misss fast skin shader?
---seems to be hit and miss for me so far
ps. thanks for all the useful tips everyone
