View Full Version : Roto > "The thing" from A.family > how do i do the back?
everlite 04-04-2007, 01:35 AM Hi guys,
Another roto question, i was thinking about doing "The thing" as in the hand from adams family. Just filming my hand tapping away at the keyboard maybe. The question i have is how would you deal with the hole when it comes around to the back? would this be roto? 3d?

CG plates are usually involved in an effect like this. For a quality result, the best approach would be to do a camera track (using pfTrack, Boujou, Maya Live etc.), then use the resulting camera to match your CG plate to your video plate. You would have to manually keyframe the cg "hole cover" to move around with the hand movement, probably frame by frame.
An alternative is to use careful pre-planning before your shoot, and produce the video in such a way that the hole is never revealed, and is always facing away from the camera. An example is the hand "running" on its fingertips. You would never have to show the roto hole for the effect to be convincing.

3rd option, depending the shots you could 2d track stumps and morph/warp them to fit.
