hi there,
i`ve got a question about greenscreens.

we plan to shoot some scenes of an movie in front of an greenscreen. our big problem is, that the material of the screen that we used for testing was not very good in the way it interacts with the lights we used to lit the screen.
in our test we used a thick paper that had way to much highlights that results in an uneven background, not very good for keying purposes;)

so my question is:

what is the best material for building up background screens? i know that there are some solutions that might be very expensive , but is there something that is a little bit cheaper?
maybe some kind of fabrics?

There are special paint and special fabrics for that, but they will cost

Why don't you rent a greenscreen? Saves you the hassle with wrong materials and is cheaper most times(unless you need it 24/7 the next two years).

we dont rent a greenscreen studio because we need a lot of shots and its a student project.our budget is at this time something about 3000€..;)maybe a little bit small when considering 2-3 month of shooting.

After reading "The DV Rebel's guide" (check it out on amazon or something- really good book)- the author suggested looking for buildings painted green.

I cruised the city and found a good inconspicous spot and set up shop there during day and didn't get bothered. Mind you my production was fairly minimal. I had a "crew" of 3 including myself.

It might not work out for you- but sometimes you get lucky!

Any Ikea building will give you the bigest blue screen you could ever possibly want.

I have done a ton of green screening and I've tried everything...what works the best is painting the backside of linoleum... Buy a roll of linoleum, the pattern doesn't matter because your going to paint the backside of it... then you can buy official greenscreen paint from Rosco or just get a sample of it and have your local paint store match it for you... The result is a sturdy flexible backdrop that doesn't reflect light at all and is very even. Since its in a roll you can roll it down a wall and on the floor thereby eliminating a harsh edge... Just get additional rolls for extra width and when your done you can roll them back up for storage.

I have seen a lot of different things used, but linoleum - that's a very cool idea.
