I want to animate a stroke with squared caps, not rounded, as they are by default in Stroke and 3D Stroke effects. Can this be done with any vector path and plug-in? Or I have to mask pre-drawn strokes?

Thanks in advance!

my first guess would be masking pre-drawn strokes, but i'll try to look into the problem and find a solution... thanks for keeping my mind busy :)

I came up with some kind of solution, that works pretty well, but may get jerky in tight corners:

1. Apply effect Stroke on solid with a Vector path
2. Create new solid and make it a box same size as the stroke
3. Copy the mask shape to the box' position, and animate both the stroke and the box, so that the box position would match the end of the stroke
4. Auto-orient (Ctrl+Alt+O) the box to orient along the path
5. Track matte Stroke 'Alpha Inverted "Box"'

Maybe you can come up with a better solution :).

This is what I came up with this technique:
