Koizu 03-08-2003, 01:35 AM Hi everyone!
We're a new studio making a 2d feature animated picture. You can see our trailer at:
http://www.julyfilms.com/trailer.htm
We're in the stage of looking for investors and just wanted to get the word out about our project, if anything, just to get some feedback and comments on our work too. Thanks and let us know what you think. Enjoy!

wow! Excellent animation...
great story too...the trailer looked very inviting...wish I could see the whole thing...:D
really nice work!
Great Animation. Great sound. Very stylish. Simply Amazing.
Wow! That's extremely impressive! I like the simplicity of the character designs, yet they seem to express a large range of character. Nice subdued colors and atmosphere in the background paintings. It really does make you believe you're viewing it as a child would see the world.
The animations are very well done too. I paused it several times and also checked out the stills from the clip. Your animators really know their stuff when it comes to squash and stretch. Films like this are why I prefer traditional over 3D animations. So far I haven't seen this quality in 3D animations and I think we're a long way from that.
Thank you for sharing and I do hope you get funding. This is one I'll look forward to seeing when it hits the theaters.
I also like the company "about us" page ... need any newbie animators? :D

Incredibly well done, I'm in love with the characters already. I agree with Kirt in every aspect. Top quality work. I've plugged you on the frontpages of cgtalk and http://www.3dfestival.com . Really hope you find those investors for this project. I would love to see it take off. Most inspirational animation I've seen passed through the talk this year
You have received the CGtalk choice award .Please feel free to display this image anywhere you like! Incredible work.
upon receiving this award, it guarantees you a spot in the cgtalk gallery hall of fame (http://gallery.cgtalk.com) - which you are now placed

The drawing style reminds me of Lilo & Stitch for some reason, I think it's the absence of hard lines.
I really like it.

I'm so excited to finally see a trailer for this, I've heard tidbits here and there about Mike Nguyen's project but personally had yet to see anything and now that I have I am very excited, I'm really glas to see classical animation features expanding into newer more natural styles like this and Les Triplettes de Belleville.
Beautiful stuff.
Looking for investors you say, well can't help you out much there, but if you need another classical anmator whose currently very available :-S Let me know ;) I hope that investors jump at this I'd llike to see these types of films really start to get recognised by the general publicrather than just the classical animation community. Course havig worked on Iron Giant I'm sure Mike is familiar with how poor publicity can hurt the best animated film from getting the recognition it deserves.

I didn't particularly like the childs' hands, and the font used at the end should be changed to something else that isn't used all the time. other than that the animation is good.

Hope you guys get all the money you need. I looking forward to seeing it. Love those "spirit" bunnies at the end of the trailer. Too bad the size is so small I wanted to get a closer look. Love the designs, the hands reminded me of Spirou comics.

What you may want to do is to pitch your idea to some studios and try to get them interested enough to foot the bill for the completion of the piece. It's not an easy task, but you've got stunning visuals to help you out, and that's what studios respond to.
Also, know how much money you need, because you will be asked. Don't ask a studio or financial backer for funding unless you know exactly how much you will need. Keep in mind the costs of transfer to film (which may or may not be an issue in your case) and final edit.
Best of luck!! Finish it up and show it off!!

It looks absolutely beautiful. Lovely animation and some great shots. It seems to come off as a montage, though, instead of a story. I really didn't understand what was going on until I visited the site and read about the movie. In this respect, the trailer is unsuccessful.
Specifically, the trailer misses the mark by following an understandable "action" and "reaction" sequence of shots with a shot of some unrelated imagery, like a little girl with a butterfly, or some kids riding buffaloes. It makes the message very hard to understand. Given that the animation is very stylized, the shot progression should be even more obvious. I really liked the shot, near the end, where the kids move towards and away from camera as they kick the soccer ball. It would be nice if the trailer could build towards dynamic shots like that, instead of being relatively flat, both in it's use of space and in the editing.
Overall, though, the piece is beautiful. It's wonderful to see a bit of animation that really is able to transport the viewer to a different world.

Rorman I disagree, I thought they conveyed the image of four groups of kids quite well and established a relationship between all of them through soccer. as for the butterfly and the spirits, those are for intrigue. I hate most trailers noways showing the story in sequence, gives away the movie before you see it, prime example is the life of David gale, promoted as a suspensful thriller, how is it a suspensful thriller when they give away the the ending thru the trailers. Trailers should give glimpes into the movie and the basic idea without getting into the entire plot. Look at spirited away, this trailer reminds me much of the original trailer for that. The disney Northamerican trailers however gave away too much of the story and plot for spirited away as well.
Yeah, I'm going to disagree with you too RormanKnockwell. The whole point of a trailer is to get the viewer interested in the film. I think this trailer does that very successfully.
First thing I did after watching it was click through every page on the website to find out more info. So, without a doubt - the trailer was successful in grabbing my interest.
Sometimes it's nice to give more info regarding the plot of the story. But as an early trailer I think that giving away too much info on this film wouldn't be as successful for grabbing the attention of potential investors. They want to get the people with the money interested in it and for them to take a look at the website to find out more info regarding the film and company.
There's always time for more plot revealing trailers later when they're closer to release and they have to bring in the consumers who will pay at the theatres to see it.

I agree w/Rorman. I had no clue what the trailer was about. the only thing that lasted in my memory was the rabbits and kids jumping around. There are lots of trailers that show critical parts of the movie. Does it matter? NO. Seeing part of the ending of a movie in a trailer means nothing as you have not seen the movie yet. So how would you know it's the ending? You wouldn't. Unless there's a book for it. Or it's an obvious, done a million times, plot sort-of-thing. why would you want to see one of those anyway?
anyhoo, you can still intrigue a viewer to have them find out more about the movie and still keep a sense of mystery to it.

You make a good point. I also don't like it when movie trailers give away too much of the film. This seems to be a trailer that is aimed at investors. For this reason it would be good to show that the creators know how to tell a story with clarity.

Never looked at it like that, interesting point to take in. personally i thought its was enough information, and the synopsis provided makes it very clear so I thinkn they will do fine, but I guess when inestors are being sought storytelling should be shown as well.

I'm happy about that, (the thing that Rorman says).
This takes me to a movie. And it was fun watching, I feld a child again... (some says I still am) and the music and sound effects gives me the feeling of a wonderful holiday in france

Thank you so much for all your encouragement, comments and critique! We can't believe how many people have seen our trailer in just posting one day here.
Thank you also to the guys at CG talk for awarding our trailer the CGtalk Choice Award. It was very unexpected.
Floyd Bishop- Thank you for the links to possible investors. We'll definitely be looking into them!
Mananetwork- Speaking for myself I would love to work on a FIFA commercial. I don't know what the guys at the studio would think but I think that would be a lot of fun. :) Or maybe Adidas.
Thanks again!

Doesn't anyone else think the animation style is a little lacking in details? It almost looks like a flash movie.
I liked the scene with all the clouds though, towards the end.

Just stunning artistic choices in the visuals...
Read about the story and at first thought this would be an incredibly subtle story!! But... the "finding happiness through cheering crowds of worshippers plot" turned me off. Maybe your plot synopsis suffers from cutting out too many of the details.
A story with a subtler detailing of happiness than "we win and therefor appreciate you" would go far to match the utterly fantastic visual style you have going.

yeah but still, what if it were meant to be that way?
it may have been lacking detail, but the animation is by far one of the smoothest animation skills i've seen, the flow was great... and the clouds = BIG PLUS :) lol
I can't wait till the whole thing is done :)

Being a classical animator I can say that this is the funniest example of a good classical animation comparison I have seen. did you notice most the elements in that classicaly animated anime piece are CG anyways. ;)
But yeah you really are comparing apples and oranges, for one they are two markets on totally opposite sides of the pacific, and they are totally different styles, heck even in animae you have a wide variety of detail, but what good is detail? Detail tends to take away a lot of the time.
POErsonally this style reminds me of the good ol days of "all the Cats Joined In" and the story much more good natured like a My Neighbor Totoro. Its nice to see an original concept, and art style beautiful in its simplicity.
Being a classical animator I can say that this is the funniest example of a good classical animation comparison I have seen.Second that thought ... :D
Anime is barely "animation" when compared to this piece. I didn't see any talking heads, freeze frame leaps w/ obligatory speed lines, or cycled clothing and hair blowing in the wind. There's a reason why anime takes these shortcuts to animation ... it would take forever to complete a film with that amount of detail (even if they were shot on threes or fours) and not use 3D elements.
Take a look at the trailer again ... I don't see anywhere where they hold a character pose for any length of time while they are in motion. Frame by frame - new page - new drawing. That's animation!
Did I mention I'm not a big fan of anime? :D

Koizu,
Great Work!!
What type of budget are you guys looking for to complete the film?
How much money do you need?
Peace,

Koizu
03-11-2003, 10:50 PM
Our animation is at 24 frames per second like Kaiskai has said, but the frame rate of our online trailer is at 12 frames per second. This was done to lower the filesize. I believe if we had compressed at 24 frames per second the filesize would be well over 20 mb.
To answer your question Dingo we are currently trying to raise 4 to 5 million dollars to complete the film including post-production.
Thanks again for everyone's encouragement and support. It's giving us all here at the studio a positive boost as we head into the next phase of our journey. :)

Well,
I really don’t care for most animation today, and I am probably not exposed to enough to appreciate the good that is out there. Plus I don’t really like sports or soccer.
That being said, I really liked this animation.
The characters simple movements and expressions, plus the soft coloring touched me. The trailer intrigued me enough to check most of your sites links. The Blue and Princess characters seem interesting.
The cloud bunnies at the end sold me :D
But I also crack up everytime I see that Toys-R-Us commercial with all of the bunny rabbits singing “here comes Peter Cotton Tail”. So ya, I’m weird like that I guess
