View Full Version : Suggestions for Unravelling Effect?
kreihman 04-02-2007, 06:38 PM Hey all!
I'm trying to figure out how to approach a certain shot in a short film I'm going to make. One of my characters is made of thread and needs to "unravel" into a big pile of string on the ground. Any information on the best way to do this would be awesome. Would I use hair dynamics or maybe cloth dynamics running extruded cylinders? I also had someone suggest blend shapes, but that seems a little intense...
Also if anyone knows any examples in special effects or movies, ect that this has been done.... reference would be extremely helpful!

Even hair might seem like a nice thing for extra special, I would suggest to try paint effects, and build lot's of spaggeti type of stuff, ropes, etc. Once animated on path they can still have geometry on them and are completely animatable.
Or just some additional "curve on curve" action - deformation! ;)
There was a script to deform on a curve. So If you need to follow the path, just have curve go on the curve path for total control.
Or with particles. Use something like brainbugz (they rule) and make a flock go down the route of unreaviling. Since they are not coliding, once they are cached, make path of their motion, and then animate curves going down this path. You can do this interactive as well...
Hair is fine, but I find that they don't collide well with anything not even themselves. So as long as you are far enough from them, you are fine...
Or best combine all of this!!!
Ultra "fast" way is to make your characther of cloth, then connect all vertices as a source of newton field. Paint seems where you want it to break, (on joints I would guess) make very round sort of like metaball "skeleton" made of passive cloth underneath, also make it source of newton field, so your cloth will be atracted to it, until gravity does it's best. Press play and instant finished! :D
This is fun!

Thank you so much for the suggestions guys! It deffinately gives me a good starting point... a lot of it is going to be experimentation I'm sure.
Thanks for both of your inputs!
