View Full Version : Roto Challenge
Studev 04-02-2007, 01:51 PM Ok, bunch of crowd that simply can't fit into the entire bluescreen and required need extra roto. The thing is the movement is quite dynamic. There's a movement. I'm thinking using spline will be a suicide even i key frame every 50 frames and reducing it to 25,15, 5 and so on to get more accurate roto. It will be labor intensive. I don't think paint matte is a good idea. I try to look around and found Motor, but the problem i see from the demo is, it works great on geometric object. How will it perform when you're organic object. It's still a question mark for me.
So, roto hardcore, any input for this task ? At least can ease 25% of the pain will be great.
BTW, Luma Key, Difference key doesn't work on this shot. It's a night scene
Any input ?
Thanks

Can you show us an example or is it NDA protected?

The best manual roto tool is Silhouette. I think, if you're going to have to roll up your sleeves and do manual masking, that it'll at least save you 25% of the pain. :)
it has good tracking tools, can help remove the camera move so at least you're only fighting the motion of the object and not object+camera.
you should exhaust any possible methods of keying or generating a matte otherwise before you try anything manual, though!
I would shy away from trying anything paint oriented - very hard to control over multiple frames.

Eventually i can't show it to you. It's DNA protected.
I never tried Silhoutte before. Yesterday, i have a long thought, i run and run the footage again and again. Something suddenly pops out to my mind is to concentrate on negative space instead of the positive subject (the people). What i need to worried about is actually the BG only and not the people. Because i think the reason why i come to that idea is there's lots of hole in between crowd and the BG. By concentrating on the negative space looks easier. I did some test, and seems to be less painful so far. It ease the pain a little.
Luma Key, Difference key doesn't seem to work in such situation. I don't know any other else possibilities to half-auto generate mattes.
I think lots of people talk good thing about Silhoutte and less negative. I will go for further thought and will invest one in it.
O yes jbills, it's a static shot mostly, several shots are crane shots. I don't think i will go for paint for such shot. It's suicide.
Thanks for the input guys
