View Full Version : concept car - HDRI rendering
raz98 04-01-2002, 07:01 AM Rendered with Vray and HDRI.
I created this car without a blueprint...just my imagination :)

A very good car design- well modeled and conceived.
I am also interested in your environment. Could one see what you used for the background? I am just curious because the reflection of this background on the car is quite good.

Very nice use of HDRI! That is a well modeled machine, very nice concept, from the side it kind of looks like a dodge intrepid a little. Only crits are from the other renders you linked, IMO the DOF is overkill. It actually takes away from a well modeled car. It(DOF) looks like you're just using it for the sake of using it. Great work!

Nice looking renders. I would have to agree about the DOF. It almost makes your car look like a toy. I am curious about the rendering times and what type of machine your using?

Nice. It would be interesting to see your settings. I still am not sure exactly what HDRi accomplishes.

FrageNSTEIN, this article is where i first learned what HDRI is and what it does, after seeing the acronym thrown around a few times. http://www.trinisica.com/sub_learn_typedissue.asp?lv=3&mode=1&issue=002
raz98, i love the car, but i agree that (especially in the render on the right) with the DOF being so close to the car with that high of a camera angle, it makes the car appear very small and the photographer is using a macro lense or something. however, i think it also has to do with the camera's focal length or zoom factor or however you set it.

thanks for the feedback :)
yes you are right, the DOF is a little to much :)
About the rendering times: well without DOF one images was rendered in 1-2 min., with DOF the time for each image was arround 8-9 min (Athlon 1300, 256 megs of ram)
I used global ilumination (but no secundary bounces) a HDRI image (from virtual vienna site I think- don't remember the link).
The image bellow is witout DOF...

cool looking render,,, not so sure about the design,, but the modeling looks good. it looks like it could be more suited too be a 4 door,,, maybe that would fix the proportions in my eyes.. keep these concepts coming,,
I also like the head lights, model and texturing. kinda BMW like,, with the blue tinting.

a little update...

Hi raz98 !
I like it very much. I love the futuristic impression it gives. It looks almost like a 1/30 scale car though, but it gives it lots of charms.
I especially like the design at the front of the car : wild and sensuous... lol
Maybe your reflective material is a bit too much reflective though.
By the way, i have wanted to use HDRI with vRay but could not be able to get anything correct.... could you tell me what settings you used for those renderings ?
Thanks by advance. And keep going !

thanks toma
about the vray and hdri....you just place a HDRI image in the Env. Map of the Environment tab(best to use some hi-res HDRI-s , because the low res doesn't get you good results). Make sure the hdri-image is set to Spherical Environment (in the material editor).
Then if you are not happy with the light that the hdri is casting you cand tweak the RGB level in the Output of the HDRI-image or the Linear White Point in the Hdri-setup tub (I don't know what plugin you are using for the HDRI image).
Also make sure you have reflective materials in the scene and turn off all your lights (or make them very weak) .
Well i 'm using vRay in fact too. But i have done all what you're talking about.
You said "Also make sure you have reflective materials in the scene ". Does it mean that every material in the scene has to be reflective even just a bit ?
Could you be a bit more precise on that particular spot ?
thx by advance.

HDRI images doesn't influence the specularity of an object, so if you have an object with specular proprieties you have to make it a little reflective.
But you don't have to do all your materials in the scene reflective...it's like in real life...some objects are reflective some are not.

Nice car  i like it so far... but you have to divide the side windows ! How will you open the door if you wanna ride this vehicle ?! Or do you have to crouch unter the window to the cockpit ?
Cool materials BTW ! Keep us up dated.
Hi Raz98 ! AND HAPPY BIRTHDAY !!! :bounce: :bounce:
May i ask how old you are ?
Well anyway, i have tried to try HDRI rendering with vRay, but still can not obtain anything. For you making a material reflective means that you add a raytrace material in the Reflection map or ?
I'm not sure to have understood. Anyway, when i render, i can not even see the environement mapping.
All this seems strange to me. Maybe i should get the latest vRay version.
Have a good day and BYE !

thanks BASSit , the doors open normal and the cockpit opens verticaly or slides from front to back - I didn't give it to much thought, I admit.
toma, thanks :) I'm 22 (yes I know, I'm old :) )
for the material, you must place in the reflect slot of the standard material, a vray map.
The standard raytraced materials or maps don't work with vray.
