Well, I havent used mental ray since max8 and yesterday I finally gave it a shot and immidietly stumbled upon problem that newer occurred.
Why is there black artifacts on torus knots

What kind of shader are you using there? The mia material or standard?
Also, try to avoid the old arch material, as it have some problems with mental ray.

I used both standard and new mi ach material.

btw; I used gi and fg in image above

What are your FG GI settings? Also, looks like you are using an area light, what are the area light samples?

FG is at 50, mi area spot at 5 samples. It worked before.

Try to use a Photometric light, a Free Area, 32 samples, you will noticed it is faster than the spot light.
Also try FG Point Density 0,3
Rays 80
Interpolation 40
Diffuse Bounces 2
And if you are using the mia material, dont forget to use the AO in the special effects tab to Enhance the FG.
