Using LW6.5, I'm working on a character who's secret identity will be revealed as I progress with this wip.:curious:
A prize of 10 Brownie points to the person who can guess who this is going to be... Although I'd be flabbergasted if anyone gets it at this stage.:scream:

drj

Grub
03-08-2003, 09:20 AM
Aha! Let's have a look at some of these guesses...:)

Remi Yeah, I see how you might've thought that. Nice try.;)
right_on_cats Anthony Hopkins! Well, if I squint... I suppose there's a vaguish sense. Not him, though.:D
drj OK, I'm advancing you one Brownie point - just 'cos you sound so sure of yourself. Besides, you're the closest.

So that leaves nine beautiful Brownie points up for grabs!:bounce: More clues in the next update...

And here I thought I'd be seeing Mr. Furious or the Blue Rajah ;^)...

Colin de bink
03-08-2003, 11:42 AM
aha if sean connery is the closest
then it must be Pierce Brosnan (because the both played james bond.)
and he looks like Brosnan too (duh)

give me those brownie points man :p

Grub
03-08-2003, 09:45 PM
John Stetzer: Lol, sorry for the disappointment!:D

Colin de bink: Pierce Brosnan - nice detective work, not him, but you're closer than you think;). I'll send you one Brownie to keep you quiet...

Er, but why do you peeps keep mentioning that other guy, Shane Cannery - never heard of him.:p

Oh, here's a more refined update with a dodgy eyebrow clue... Damn, not that you need it.:)

http://members.lycos.co.uk/grubart/WHOHE3.JPG

Well, the mystery is solved, thanks to Drj, who eyeballed him earlier, much to my flabbergasting:scream:

Just want to throw another guess into the mix....Well if Sean Connery is close and Pierce Brosnan is even closer then it must be BOND, JAMES BOND, from say Goldfiner... Well this might just be an edumacated guess..... Nice work although............

:D

eh... updating... that happens when I get up the guts to decide whether or not I need to rebuild the mesh over again from scratch. :surprised Don't worry though, I'm gonna finish him... not that I'd call him hunky exactly, he's still pretty skinny-- not like your guy Mr Connery, oh no, HE'S hunky. *points at the burly shoulders you haven't modeled yet* He was a sailor, you know.

Grub

So you prefer Sean, Gnarly - well, he's bald and hairy, you know.:p Then again, some girls like that.:D

'Ears the latest update... I've modelled his lugs, eyes, and done some fine tuning. No assymmetry as yet but I think he's getting there... :wip:

Oh gawd, that is so HIM! What reference pictures are you using, anyway, and where'd you get em?? Looks like you're doing the younger version for sure... (though he was really at his most dashing in Highlander) As for hairiness... well, just ask Leigh... :p

drj-- yup, Bend. Wow, this must be the first time I've seen somebody around here who was within 1000 miles of me. International forums are weird places!

It is there. He is looking pretty good. He is kinda looking a little thick. Maybe try to slim him up a little bit. make him seem leaner and taller. James bond has a real sharp look. Sean kinda looks like he has had a twinkie problem while on R&R:)

gnarlycranium
03-24-2003, 07:27 AM
Ohhhhhh gawd!! It's too much!! How am I supposed to crit that thing when he's got that eyebrow and that LOOK on his face?!!! Gahhahahah!!

I agree about the thickness.. though of course our dear Mr Connery is no skinny man, he be burly... at least ref pics shouldn't be too hard to find-- if you can bear to look at em.

Definitely like his shoulders! Now he needs abs!

Grub
03-25-2003, 11:57 AM
Drj and Gnarly- I promise to cover him soon!

Here's some wires-

http://home.1asphost.com/grub/connewwiremrk2.jpg

drj
03-25-2003, 03:48 PM
i guess whats so nice about seeing someone's wireframe is that I realize as a beginner that in order to fix most of my problems I start adding more polygons...which can sometimes be appropriate, but most times is just the easy fix that becomes overwhelming in the long run.
Grub your frame looks very well done. Has this been completely a polygon type attack?

gnarlycranium
03-25-2003, 04:11 PM
Oh yes definitely!! I think that's EXACTLY what most of us do in the beginning... if something doesn't look right you assume it needs more polys... and it all gets insanely out of hand. I've been having to work really hard at making myself keep things simple.

That wire is niiicely spiffily clean, much more than I expected. Just like the head!

drj
03-25-2003, 04:44 PM
and the actually SHAPING at the beginning is so much easier when you only have to turn a few polys as opposed to a row of 20 or more. I guess I'll get the hang of it sooner or later....I won't give up:bounce:

gnarlycranium
03-25-2003, 05:19 PM
Oh definitely, no kidding-- that's the part nobody seems to get. I was so PISSED when I made my first decently topology-d model and realized how MUCH easier it was to get the thing head-shaped...... after allll those months I spent wrestling with the lumps on meshes that were too damn dense in all the wrong spots.

Grub
03-25-2003, 05:29 PM
Drj, yes, poly by poly is the way I've been tackling this model. I just love spinning those LW quads! I agree with what Gnarly says about density, this model's pretty light, Connery's body isn't that ripped so less detail is needed.

drj
03-25-2003, 05:32 PM
Of course I don't want to get into the typical "which program is better argument", but I've been told by people whom use both that LightWave is better at Poly modeling...any opinions?

Remi
03-25-2003, 05:56 PM
If you can tell why it would be better let me know....it's the artist not the tool....what ever suits your style......nice job on the model by the way...

drj
03-25-2003, 06:06 PM
Grub...you're PM message box is full and your email through your profile says: That user has specified that they do not wish to receive emails through this board. If you still wish to send an email to this user, please contact the administrator and they may be able to help.

Grub
03-25-2003, 06:08 PM
Thanks, Remi.:)
Yes, the artist has to push the package... And many packages have their own nifty features, but I'm really enjoying Lightwave modelling.;)
Hey, I'm also looking forward to texturing this with ZBrush.

Haha, this thread's mental:D
Thanks for letting me know, drj:thumbsup:

drj
03-25-2003, 06:11 PM
Hey Remi,
I don't really know if there is a difference...I'm just saying i've heard that from two different people whom use both that LightWave Poly modeling was better (or maybe more intuitive?) and I was wondering if Grub thought it was easier as well.

Grub
03-25-2003, 06:21 PM
I say try a few out, and see what you think. You have to get past the interface first, before you can really see whether a package is good or not.;) I got LW to expand on my ZBrush modelling skills. You can probably argue ceaselessly for every package - most people are biased towards the ones they use. Me too:D

S(ch)ean connery is still THE james bond, I think is the point :D Brosnan is getting to be okay at it, and Moore really wasn't bad in the scheme of things, especially considering when Timothy Dalton came in and sucked worse than George Lazenby!

Oh well..anyway, he's looking schweet now..misch moneypenneh would approve. Only crits I can think of at the moment are he's still symmetrical, and the earlobes could stick out or have a little crease or something..ears are looking a bit flat on the whole from this shot. Look forward to more..rock on.

bigbad & stonefist- Roger was OK in my book. Sean Connery has to be number one, though.

hypercube- Thanks for the crit.:) I've been avoiding the ears for a while, I'll try and address that flatness. Also, I pretty much agree with your Bond analysis. Didn't think George Lazenby would get a mention on this thread, him being a one-shot Bond. Hey, but what about the really 'forgotten' one... There was the American character, 'Jimmy Bond' who acted in the pre-Bond b/w Casino Royale movie. I forget the actor's name, though. Maybe someone can remind me.

Hey KlooM can you tells us what was your exact step to get this? :)
thx

I'm not sure I remember what I did now. It was some back and forth from levels and hue/saturation. If you put an adjust level modifier on the image and adjust the RGB channels separately you can get some good results. It's no recipe really, just monkey around with the sliders. Much easier to get tones right when you get the changes in realtime. :)

And the dof effect is of course just painted on with the blur tool. Added a little noise with a blur on top to de-digitalize it a bit, very popular these days.

As exact as I got it.

Lukashi- Yeah Luk, thanks for pointing that out, dude- it's on the list, cheers.

Threedeemer- Thanks, I'm pleased you think I got his likeness, which is the main thing- I don't mind if he looks painterly, as long as his character comes thru. Getting him totally realistic will be a bonus.
liQu1d- Heheh, thanks.

KlooM & JonC- Thanks for posting.

nofxsapunk- Those eyebrows need a little something, maybe some bump. I'll get onto it, thanks.

NanoGator- Thanks for the kudos!

Mentat7- The update's here, you evil snickerpuss.

Virtuoso- You're right, it's been tricky getting him there. It's rewarding to know that people are enjoying seeing this progress, cheers.

Here's an update that I've done as b/w photo-style test shot. I've made changes here and there, more to come later...

Looks great, Grub! Why is it when I see a render of this guy, I want to spend the next ten minutes talking like him? I love the way you've dealt with the little things like the creases around his eyes and the borders of his hair. Will you be trying to hairify him with a plug-in or are you going to leave it as is? Incidentally, this is pretty darned good for polygon hair!

hey its bond...really nicely done man. Um maybey make him a little more grubier, some facial hair, like a 5 o'clock shadow, maybey a few inperfectons in his skin.. other then that really great likeness.

FallenSwordsman- If I'd had access to a hair plug-in, it would have made things easier. I spent ages building up his polygonal toupee, I'm glad you liked it.

Spirit2029- Thanks for the crit, although bond is pretty clean-cut, yes, I agree- he needs some more irregularities.

Vash T Stampede and TES- Thanks a lot for your remarks.

Kaiser_Sose- Thanks very much, though I'll not be doing a tutorial for this- I've nothing really to add to what's already out there in the way of texturing.

Hickory2.5- Cheers, Hick- I'm getting round to it.

Koinu- Heheh thanks, I think that Devon guy drove the truck.

Dom and Maximus Groff- Thanks for commenting.

McSpirit and Deeug- Appreciate your interest, check out my latest.

I'll be continuing the progress over here, for any who'd like to follow it, here's the link-

That does look very sweet. That IS S.Connery in his younger days. Slightly stylized though. Very good stuff:buttrock: :)
