View Full Version : ATI causing problems?

I have just upgraded to a new computer in the office which has an ATI Radeon 9000 Pro inside. Sadly my work in Max is getting interrupted by the screen turning off and the computer freezing. I'd like to try and illiminate the graphics card from the problem, and I was wondering if anyone else has had any similar problems with the same card, or if anyone is successfully using the ATI Radeon 9000 with Max.

If it's any help, the spec is as follows...
Dual AMD MP 2400+
Tyan Tiger MPX motherboard
2Gb DDR RAM.
Windows 2000 SP3.
3D Studio Max 5

I don't have the same card model as you but I've had similar experiences. What worked for me is removing the most recent drivers and going back 3 or 4 rev's until I found a set that worked. Now I have no problems. Maybe try that and see if it works for you. It is a pain in the ass, but I still think ATI make some of the better cards out there and will be worth the effort to get it working. It's just their drivers that are questionable at times.

Good luck.

Mine sucks...
I just bought a 9700 pro for work and it's slower than my gf4 TI 4600 (softquadro'd) at home and on top of that it's just flaky as hell. oh wait... on top of that it was twice the price.

Drivers, incompatibility with software, etc.

Nvidia = happieness ;)

btw... are you guys running amd or intel?

I'm running on a 9000 Pro and a Athlon 1700+ with Windows 2000, no problems whatsoever.

Stupid question: Have you updated to the lastest drivers?

i have r9700 pro and had some probs at first...

but then ATI released catalist 3.1 and all the 3dmax bugs were gone :D

btw: some guy on another forum used direct3D instead of openGL drivers in max to fix some problems he had... maybe that will work out for ya...

Thanks for the replies folks. If Marcel is having no problems, then there's got to be light at the end of the tunnel. I have got the latest drivers (Marcel :)) but I'll give some earlier revisions a try.

I'm trying DirectX now to see if the problem persists. It's not the best solution though, as OpenGL is the king.

Visualboo... I'm an nVidia man all the way, but I'm not responsible for purchasing the machines. Some nutter seems to think that nVidia cards don't agree with AMD's?? Oh well..

Discreet have also posted a DirectX 9 update for max 5 on their support downloads page. Make sure you get that, too.

Thanks for the tip Signal to Noise.

I seem to have slightly solved to problem by turning off the OpenGL extensions for accelerating the wireframe display in the viewports. Still doesn't solve the problem that changing any options in "Display Properties->Settings->Advanced" causes my machine to reboot when clicking "OK"
