Just bought 8.5. I had been told it had a new feature where you can move vertices along an edge without disrupting the edge, like sliding a bead along a taught string. I don't know how to do this? Anyone who knows -- please help.

If this has been covered in an earlier thread,I apologize for the repetition. I couldn't find it.

Thanks.

If you're talking about what I think you're talking about, then Maya has been able too do this for a long time.

Click on the vertex. Hold down "v". (edge snapping) Then middle mouse drag along one of the vertice's edges.

No, that of course is not new. that snaps a vertice to a vertice but will pull the relative position of the edge of the "moved" vertice along with it, and must be worked around when doing rebuilds. What I'm talking about is new to 8.5 -- this from one of autodesk's people -- where the position of the edge is frozen and the vertices are "slid" along it, litterally like beads sliding on a string, making reconstruction much easier and intuitive. This was not available on any earlier versions, but I forgot where the tool for this technique is located.

Anyone else with any knowledge on this?

select you vertex and hold down C and it will slide along the edge.

Hehe, oops. Ya, it's "c" for curve snapping.

Hi. Were at cross purposes here. This is not for snapping vertices to anything, but rather repositioning them along an edge to smooth out or better reconstruct a complex polygon surface.

Holding "c" while moving pulls the edge with the vertice, and is not new to 8.5.

A new function I was told would be available in 8.5 is moving vertices along polygon edges without dragging the edge at all, which would be a great boon in reconstructing complicated forms. Anyone know about this new function?

Are you talking about a vertex slide function? Like in modo? Maya NEX can do that, I don't think theres any built in functionality.
