I think the little people walking around does alot. They make it look more realistic.
They are very small, how did you animate them. Some keys on boxes or do they have an actual rig?

Great image indeed, but what elements are 3D? It appears to be a matte painting, the only program mentioned is Photoshop. :shrug:

Its my mistake I forgot to chose 3ds max and shake also.
As process whole castle is modeled, textured and rendered with GI. And the rest is matte painted projected on simple geometry
Jonason walkers are motion captured bipeds with simple mesh on them
