View Full Version : cloth interpenetration with object

hey,

i am quite new to cloth and besides maya crashing a lot i have some problems.
the tutorials from aw were fine for me.
but then i wanted to create cloth for other characters and the biggest problem for me right now is the interpenetration of the cloth with the underlying geometry.
additional collision objects and increasing steps by frame did not help.
and i can not offset the cloth so far, that it works by "look" means.

anyone with some tips on where to tweak with that kind of problem?

cheers

when does it happen ?
Just from the start of the cloth-simulation ?
You sure know, cloth needs 10-20 start-frames to calculate.

As far as i know, cloth has full poly-like-function, means, you can select the faces and extrude them, so you would get a thickness into your cloth and could avoid interprenetrations.

Hope it helps,

thanx all solved:
maya 4.0 seems to have really buggy cloth simulation..
higher frame solves had no effect at all..

i let it check in 4.5 and the exact same file came out without a single interpenetration..

i *cant* believe it..
they really DO fix bugs in versions :)

cheers & thanx

they probably fix defaults.

I can't remember the setting, but the node that establishes a piece of geometry as a cloth collision object has a parameter that controls how finely that geometry's resolution is evaluated. Crank it up and you get slower solutions, but less interpenetration.

hmm.. i can only find the collision offset and depth values..
and the only possibility i found in the manuals to get better collision evaluation are the frame samples and time step size values.. and they did exactely nothing in 4.0..
in 4.5 they seem to do their job.. gets a bit slower but the result has no flaws..

thanx anyway

Hmm.

I KNOW i've fixed this problem in 4.0 by twiddling with attributes. When I get a chance I'll look it up.

remember to scale your solver

the maya cloth properties are set to be a one to one relationship with real world dimensions
so if you character is the size of a doll the properties will be for a jacket that size

if you character is 10 times small then real size scale your solver to 10

this will help with penatration errors and make your cloth behave a lot better

yes.. my solver is scaled correctly..
as i said:
maya 4.5 will solve all the problems that i had.

mark:
are you sure you dont mean the geo-sampler (i think that is what it is called.. ) when using particles?
that one can have higher tesselation for better surface emission and better collision detection..

but if you find that one for the cloth solver as well i would be very interested to get that piece to know..
if i have the chance to have a slower but reliable solution for the future, that is what i want.

thanx all again

cheers
