View Full Version : HMC 8: Charlie Chaplin "The Tramp" 1915

Hey Guys and Galls,
My name is Brian Bouffard, I have chosen to participate in this hard core modeling challenge. I have already started blocking in my character. Charlie Chaplin from “The Tramp.” I have spent about five hours so far in the blocking in of him. I am not sure if it is ok to start posting our work in progress but here it goes. I know that I have a long way to go but, but I thought that I would try and get some feedback on my start. I feel that its much better to get some feedback positive or negative earlier on. This way it’s much easier to make the changes before I get to far along.
So, I have attached a Anterior view, Lateral view, and a three quarter view.
Please let me know what you think so far. Also, If it is to early for us to start posting or work in progress I will delete the file.

hi, nice choice of character.
the only critics i could do is
1 :that the head is perhaps a little to small.
2: the profil head view is good, but the face one is to thine.
3: the shoes are to basic.

Thank you for your feedback! I was beginning to think that no one has even looked at my work. You know I think that you are right; the head does look a little thin from the anterior view. I was not sure about this but now that you mention it you are right. You know when you are working so closely with something you begin to see past these issues. I will definitely scale the face to give it more thickness. As for the shoes, I am planning on taking Charlie into Zbrush here in a day or so to add all of those details! This also includes, detailing out his hair, mustache, eyebrows, coat, pants and shoes.
I am trying to keep the poly count down to help keep the animation rig running smoothly. I plan on rigging him over the weekend.

Hi, I agree that this is a nice character :)
Are you going for likeness or recognizability? As a stylized character with very strong visual clues in his costume, Chaplin is easy to recognize if you provide similar visual clues (the hat, the mustache, the heavy eyebrows and the frisky hair...the cane, etc). However, often tis is all we see. If you asked people to point to Chaplin in a lineup and nobody wore costumes or make up, I bet people would have a hard time.
If you are trying to model a character that people would recognize as Chaplin, I think you are on the right track. But if you are attempting to get a likeness to the man behind the make up, I would say this should probably be pushed a lot further before you start sculpting...

Thanks for you comments! Well, I completely agree with, looking at images of Chaplin out of his makeup he looks completely different. I am modeling him with the intention of recognition, and following the guidelines provided for the modeling challenge. Chaplin was dressed like the way I have modeled him in the Movie “The Tramp” So, I hope that I am able to achieve a good likeness. My major at school was more in the way of Compositing, and Rotoscoping. I only changed my major very close to the end. I unfortunately, do not have as much modeling practice as I would like. But I know that if I want to model for a living, I have to keep up the mouse clicks, and put my nose to the grind stone.
I have had the intentions to model Chaplin for quite some time. It just so happens that I was planning on modeling him next in my line up. It was great to see that he was listed in the challenge. This has given me even more encouragement to complete this model as quickly as I can.
I plan on rigging him, and handing him off to some of my friends who are amazing animators. Going throught school, many of my animation teachers always encouraged us to watch and learn from Chaplin. He was an amaging inspiration, and wonderfull resource for how to achieve fantastic animation that really sells. I guess that is why Disney always encouraged his animators to watch Chaplin as well.

Given the amount of subdivisions in his trousers, you should try to model the characterisitc folds down by the shoes. Also, watch out for his waist, he does not have quite the hour glass figure you seem to have given him...

Thank you again for your feedback! You are absolutely correct about his waist. This is something I did not see. But now that you mention it I can see what you are saying. I will fix this post hast. But I am not sure if I want to model in the wrinkles into the base mesh. I was thinking about applying in a cloth simulator. The new simulator in Maya 8.5 I was told was quit amazing! What do you think? I know that for the modeling challenge it would be good to model in these details, But in the long run with the fact that I want to have him animatable, and fully functional for animators is it a good Idea to model in these details, knowing that he will be moving and his pant legs will definitely be moving and deforming around quite a bit!
I think it may be hard to get the desired effect via cloth sim, but there is no harm in trying... As for animation, cloth sim is costly but can give more realistic results, so it depends on the style of the project. An idea might be, since you know the animators, to askt them what they would prefer...
