View Full Version : HOW to bend a ribbon over a sphere... [with IMG]
mattjakob 03-30-2007, 01:21 AM I'm getting quite mad with this...
The thing itself is not complicated to make, but quite confusing to define... that's why probably I cant get how to do it...
(already tried with projection, but loose results)
Have a look at the image... It's a ribbon made out of a sphere. What I need is the ribbon not to be straight but slightly bended like a sinus. It can resemble the moebius strip, but it doesnt twist

If someone knows how to do a correct projection, or how to bend a "straight circular strip" (carved out from the sphere), or whatelse......
THANKS

Can be done with Clothilde relatively easily. Not a fantastic render but illustrates results. I can send a file if you like.

also, you can do it with the mesh deformer plug in.

Thanks kerbouci for your link.. but with meshdeformer is not guaranteed the initial volume and the sphere must be realized in the right way (with clean uv).

Mapping it is another option.
Create it as a simple ring, then use the spherify deformer.

Sweep, spherify and displacement work as well :)

Woa. thanks... you're much better than the guys at the Maya forum
lol
I'm really moving to Cinema4D (from Maya) :-D
Anyway, could you be a bit more precise over the displacement thing ?!?
MANY THANKS

activate snap centre of polygon then create a spline like you want then use a sweep nurb!

You can duplicate the bump in the displacement or just choose a tex to displace.
I used checkerboard /u=32/v=o
