I've been playing with the bundled remote satelite rendering raysat software that comes with maya to try and get my rendering times down. I have 3 Pcs. 1 quad core, 1 dual core and 1 single core. Everything is clocked at 3.0 GHz ( the dual and quad are overclocked 2.66 intel core2 chips the single is an Intel P4). Everything has 2GB memory and GB E interfaces although i'm only using a cheap linksys GB switch. I'm using Maya 8 and rendering from the master command line.
The rendering times are per frame averaged over 10 frames
Quad (master) 300 seconds
Quad (master) + Dual (slave) 240 seconds
Quad (master) + Single (slave) 305 seconds
Quad (master) + Dual + Single (slaves) 190 seconds
So there seems to be about 1 CPU's worth of overhead to remote rendering.
Are there ways to configure raysat remote rendering to work more efficiently ?
Can i run two jobs and specify which servers to render on ?
What i would like to do is allocate 3 local CPU's to rendering 1 job, 1 local cpu to management and the 3 remote CPUs to rendering a second job.
The only option i see is the -rnm flag for rendering everything remotely.
