Enlightenment : (In so many ways)

After watching a pixar film last week I decided to model the 'luxo' lamp from the opening scene to practice various methods of lighting and how to create and manipulate volumetric light and shadows.

Here's what I ended up with and I am quite pleased. Although I can no longer see the image for what it is only how it has been made up (polys/splines... etc) and the parts I am unhappy with.

Quite annoying really

what's with those unplugged lights which still glow lately?

apart from that...nice render. The metal could be a bit more reflective IMO

Lamps like this always reminds
me on pixar! But I like it... nice
concept and good modeling...
I would change some of the
materials and the back ground...
Although nice work!

Nice, but a light creates directed light by being bounced and forced off the lamphud/kap whatever you wanna call it and it does get lit in the process :P

Still, very nice modeling and scene.

Thanks for the comments guys, as I say it was modelled on PIXARS luxo Jr lamp.
Good idea about adding a background, not sure what it should be though.

Only used 3 materials on this one (wood floor, chrome and plastic for the wires and plug). I haven't got a material on the lamp itself. maybe I should.

Thanks again, ALL coments greatfully received

Thanks again (ALL!), I am in the process of rendering the same scene with a few material tweaks, its in its 10th hr now :o( (running a Imac G5 with 2GB RAM but I need something faster!)

I'll try and post it here some time tonight. You've all got strong portfolios yourselves and I do appreciate the comments and tips and I will take them on board

Cheers

An addition of a material to the lamp increases the render time 10 fold, and I don't know if it's any better (spec and bump on the floor have gone mental). I might just draw a line under it and say "FINISHED". It's hard to know when to stop.
