View Full Version : Max/ After Effects workflow issue

I've been getting alot of conflicting recommendation when it comes to settings in 3D, comp and video edit/ output.

Usually, I render my Max animation as D1, frames, 30 fps, TGA sequence (just recently SGI due to 16 bit channel support). Then import into After Effects for compositing and render it out as D1, 30 fps, SGI sequence. But recently changed the comp setting to TGA with RLE compression 24 bit (due to a recommendation from a friend). Do I lose any image quality? And edit/ output in Media 100 or Avid Xpress DV as 30 fps. Or is 29.97 suggested??

What's the best methodology for a 3D/ comp/ output setup. This stuff is getting really techie and confusing.

I was planning for the next Max animation to render as D1, 24 fps, frames, SGI sequence. And comp it in AFX as D1 but render as D1 720x486, 3:2 pulldown 29.97 fps, PICT sequence into a non-linear editing package to output to tape. Btw, how do I customize in After Effects a 3:2 pull?

Does this sound right and will I have problems with synching sound?

thanks.

Here's my normal recipe:

Exporting from MAX: D-1, 30fps, TGA or RLA (AE 5 uses this format now)

then exporting from AE: D-1, 29.97, TGA, and interlace the video. The interlace can be done either in MAX during render or in AE.

Then again I could be way off base. :) Anyone else want to chip in with your suggestions?

RLE = Run Length Encoding, a lossless form of compression.
32 bits enables alpha, good for compositing.

Proper fields CANNOT be added in post, max calcs object and camera distance to create proper fields.

Why would you do a 3:1 pulldown unless your footage was shot with a 24 fps camera?

D1 from max can look good without fields if motion blur is used and nothing comes to close to the camera and the cam speed is not too high.

29.97 drop frame timecode only comes into play on longer format productions, choose it anyway - can't hurt right.

Perhaps (I say that a lot) a trip to the rosetta stone is in order?

P.S. - I could be wrong and stand ready to be corrected.
