Hello, does anyone know any tutorials or how to start on modeling high - definition mountains or rocks? I am modeling a mountain for one of my scenes and I don't know what would be the best way to approach it. Should I go with displacement or zbrush/mudbox it? is there anything anyone would like to share?

Assuming you're using maya, a displacemnt map is the way to go.

I just found this a few days ago, haven't tried it yet but it looks very good.

I have tried this one though, it's a lot simpler than the first tutorial but it works well.

Oh and if you don't want to use DEMs try downloading teragen to sculpt your own terrain then export the .raw data for your displacement map. The only drawback is that the freeware version doesn't export large .raw files so larger landscapes don't look the best.

This is assuming you're using maya, there are standalone programs that are made specically for generating landscapes, Terragen being one of them and Vue.

The same principles apply with Max you'd still use a displacement map, I've found using a gradient ramp for the diffuse channel and the bump map to have pleasing results.
