View Full Version : please help me make some paint fx hair
sabungero 03-07-2003, 02:44 AM hello people...
pls look at the image posted before replying ;-)
what i have is a head...w some splines that would later become hair strands/clusters via paint fx...the look that i am trying to achieve is kinda like the ones u see on the hair of the final fantasy 8 and 9 cinematics characters(layered spiky hair kinda looks like leaves, almost)can anyone please guide me on how i am going to get the desired effect.(?)
ps...what i am doing now is attaching the brushes to the curves...what i get is bushy hair...bec paint fx paints in dividual hair tufts along the spline not one single stroke along a spline...making my character look like some scraggly homeless fellow....please help
thanks in advance

Instead of splines why not model simple nurbs geometry. This way you can layer the geometry to affect a layered hair appearence.
I usually use the blondenoshape brush and change the attributes to suit my needs.
Just remember to set the nurbs geometry in a "not renderable" layer.
Paint the hair to this in away that it will follow the geometries surface.(I think the setting is found in the BRUSH TEMPLATE SETTINGS==> creation ==>tubes direction .
Change this setting from along normal to along path ,so that it will follow your strokes. Also adjust the length etc to your needs.
In simple scenes key the motion of the nurbs by hand to affect things like a hair sweep.
To add dynamic interaction with forces you can define Paint Effects brush forces (paint effects brush template settings) or apply forces to stroke control curves that you have created.
Forgot to mention add a "spring" to the paint effects strokes to get some dynamic movement like inertia.
Hope some of the above was applicable and helpful, good luck

you could also try putting a nurbs sphere in side the head (you can hide this later) and paint on that sence you can't paint on polys
you now what rather then go int detail here why don't you read my tutorial on long hair and paintFX
go to my home page and under paintFX follow the link to the AW site
hope this helps

i want to achieve a similar effect seen on these characters ;-) not quite as beautiful but looks ok.....a single pfx stroke for a single hair clump/lock/spike/leaf or what ever the japs call em
bambam: i saw ur site already! yup! i downloaded the tut long ago...the hair just isnt quite what im looking for ;-) but thanks anyway ;-)
