Hello Cgtalk,

This is the first time I've ever tried anything like this, so I hope it goes well. I guess I was drawn in by David Bowie's wild 80s mullet in Labyrinth.

I started a few days ago, and I will post progress soon.

This is a quick post of my reference. These are just labyrinth screen grabs. I have regular Bowie reference, too, which is interesting because they used a lot of make-up to make him look different. For instance, his nose is not as narrow as it appears here. I'm in Zbrush and doing skin tests in Maya right now. Once this post gets verified, I will put up the model-in-progress shots.

But I will say that watching Labyrinth and searching for David Bowie images is more fun than work.

Yay, here is another update. I know I've been lazy about posting updates, but as the contest is almost done, they won't be so far apart from now on. For me, this was more about actually finishing one of these challenges.

So here is my progress:

Started with poly plane to get the base mesh:

At this point I was more trying to get the overall look of David Bowie, pre Z-Brush. I wasn't too concerned with hitting it exactly in the model, because Zbrush is so good for that.

Obviously, the hair and make-up add a lot to the Goblin King. I've been working out some hair, but am definitely not ready to make a post about that yet. The lighting and material qualities need to worked out; the above is just a displacement test and overall look.

One of the things with choosing to work on a young David Bowie is that a lot of my early images of him were of a much older Bowie. So making him look younger and not overdoing the Zbrush became a challenge. So, that is fun.

These are my first few posts on cgtalk, and I'm finding that this wasn't as hard as I was making it out to be.

Any comments or critiques would be very welcome.

Nice stuff, Looks like you got a good start there.

anyway....heres some C&C

the nose on your model looks a little bulbous compared to the research pics you have. Bowies nose looks slender and in almost parallel in width from bridge to tip. This is exagerated by the fact that the eye make up comes down either side of the nose also.

If your rigging the model then this doesn't matter. In most the research pics Bowie has a stern and serious look. If your going for this then, All you need to do is to lower the corners of your mouth and invert the smile a bit.

Hope this helps. Keep at it anyway...... i'm losing my mind with my entry.

Jesus I remember that film Labrynth... was so twisted but a really excellent film. Bowie was class as is the model. :)
