View Full Version : How to key Soft IK?
bobzilla 03-06-2003, 11:51 PM I have a rig that's part regular IK and part Soft IK. How do I key the animation to get the Soft IK "wobble and bounce"? When my character walks, I want the tail to sway a little. How do I key the regular IK controllers and get the tail to record its swaying? Hope I'm explaining this correctly...

Hi. Just key frame everything the same. The only difference is that for the tail all you have to do is put keyframes for the root (meaning root of the tail) bone you have swinging. The children with the soft I.K. will "wobble and bounce" automatically as they follow the root. You will not see this secondary motion until you press play and watch the tail. If you are getting to slow of a play which is probably the case you can check it by using Make Preview. This is how I had to recently do it. The Automatic Redraw does not mater if it is checked while making key frames. In the Dino Tail file that comes with cinema delete all the keyframes except the ones at zero and make some new ones by rotating the patent bone. Then press play. This may get you going before you try it on your own character. Hope that helps. It has been a few weeks since I was doing this but that should be it.

Thanks very much I'll give that a try. That pretty much how I was hoping it could be done. Yes...the redraw is a nightmare. I can't imagine using Soft IK on an entire figure. I have a Mac running OS 10.2.4 with 1.5 GB of RAM and the Mime freaks out when scrubbing or playing!

One thing that you can do to speed up the redraw when using SoftIK is to turn off the HyperNURBS (clicking on the green check). Having HyperNURBS activated, unfortunately, tends to cause some slow redraw.
You'll lose some quality of the model but this is just for the animation process. Once you've finished, fire the HyperNURBS back up and render.

Believe me, I've tried every trick the manual recomends. Yes, turning HN off or reducing in editor to 0 helpes the most.
Thanks. Now I just have to learn how to animate!!!!
