I'm setting up a permanent backburner2 renderfarm for the school I work for. If anybody's interested on how it's done check the following thread:

Now, I need to come up with simple instructions for students on how to move their work to a network drive ("Renderdrive") so all the paths are consistent. Usually they use textures and other stuff from all over the place.

I thought the Resourse Collector utility would be the most efficient and simple way of doing it. Collect everything to one folder, move the folder to a network drive, open a file from there, send to backburner.

Does it make sense to you?

Force them to use UNC paths for everything...not mapped drives. That could help.

They can't use UNC paths cause they can't see anything but the mapped drives on the network due to security arrangements. They would have to manually type them - not such a good idea. Plus, that would restrict them to 10 render nodes - I'm planning on using more than that.

Just an idea, haven't tried it for cleaning up paths in max files to render on renderfarms but...

Use the 'archive' function to collect all max files and images your students scenes are using. This way, each student ends up with a directory with every asset required to open and render their scene. If they're located on a public drive then all server machines will find them and be able to access all the assets specific to each project.

Hmm... may just work.
