A quicky for a friend of mine who is about to do a presentation on his game (http//:www.dreamersgame.com).
I seem to find myself lost in photo-realism/matt-painting of this background and I haven't even placed the foreground character/s in yet! I'm using a colour palette from a photosource (you can see it on the far left).

It's a blend of a dream scape forest floor against a hardwood floor.
Lightsource is "coming from above"
There's going to be two figures in picture. One in mid sleep in the middle another maybe on the right hand side lurking.

Here's a concept-quickie I sent off to my friend (he disappears for a few days) - but it's far from the original idea I had. So I'll revisit the image and work on something closer to my original intention later.

Here's a sketch-close-up of the main figures.

Finished the background a couple of days ago, but didn't realise I had scaled it down in the process of working on my WIP images ... so now i have to go back into detailing the more in-focused nature-elements *sigh*

hey zach, i really liked the mysterious composition and lighting you had in that previous pic...now that you have blurred it and plan to cover it up with these large figures, I'm afraid it may lose all of that charm! also the scale does not seem right anymore with the new sketch..but I really loved what you were doing before

I agree with stuh, keep the first picture and just elaborate on the hardwood floor. Love the forest, and yeah, I lose myself in environments/mattes. :)

thanks for the feedback guys - maybe i'll work on two seperate pieces in the end .
the original intention was to have the figures in the picture, I was just working the background first in this case.

as for the blurring of the image - it wasn't intentional :) As i said before I accidentally worked on it at a smaller canvas size (1000pxls), and I have now expanded it (3600pxls wide). I'll be adding further details to the background once I've dealt with the figures.

cheers!

Trees and leaves look so damn realistic! How did you do it? :D
I would make composition less centered?

the trees? I do them leaf by leaf ...
it's like a little trance state I fall into - soon there's a whole forest
