I've done a bunch of modeling in maya and have tried lighting it, but I haven't taken any lighting classes so I can't get it to look how I want. All I want is a simple white light setup to show my (thus far untextured) character much like a lot of what you see on cgsociety. I know that there are places for free character rigs etc and wondered if anyone knew of anything similar for lighting? Any help would be much appreciated.

a quick and easy way to light is to use a tippet rig (dont know if I spelled that right). You can download one off of highend3d.com

Otherwise, just use spotlights and use quadratic decays (youll have to turn the intensity way up though), and add some fall-off and a - penumbra to say a key light (which will be placed in front and above the character).

so one spotlight infront and pointing down, another behind with no decay, and one under the character for bounce light.

Start from there and add/subtract spotlights as u see fit.

Yea that should work prety good. Or you can use IBL with an area light with nice soft shadows. Should work well. GL
