CGTalk - Layer animation

does anyone know how to create an animation layer without using clips?

I need to rig a very old car and I would like to have a slider that controls the amount of jittering caused by the engine. I would like to use this control on top of the animation the car is going to have.

Any help would be greatly appreciate.

if you want random car shake then I would write and expression using noise, multiply that by an a custom attribute that is from 0-inf, and that can be on the rotate pivot of the car. Hope this helps
