This is just a question regarding maya's rendering that everyone complains about. With the recent price drop a purchase of this product is now a possibility. i realize that the rendering is not very close to rendering packages like softimage, but how close is it too the std rendering with 3DSMax. The reason that I ask is that it seems that most people slamming it a referring to a render of a simple sphere with no lighting setup. This post is not meant to start a war, I just want some input from people who KNOW what they are talking about. Thanks in advance

Maya's renderer is fine, even good. just remember it's node based like the rest of the program is. Make sure you really understand what it is you want to get out of it, Maya assumes nothing about your scene when it renders it (that's why most people think it sucks). If you take the time to learn about the nodes in Maya's renderer, how they work, and learn about general shading principles (I have found information on renderman to be very helpful in working with maya) then you will get the results you are looking for in Maya. If you just create a blinn, fill the channels with textures and expect to get what you want, expect to be disapointed.

im from a max background but iv been using maya quite heavily for about a year now, and while i think maya is far better than max in almost all areas, that is all but rendering.

i have never had any problems rendering anything in max, its realy (realy) fast and the quality is also top. as far as maya gos its a real knightmare somtimes (in my case most of the time), its about 5 times slower in scanline, its motion blur is also far slower than maxes, it has real probs with DOF and shadow map quality ( beacause it dousent Anti-alias depth files), memory use is also alot higher than max and (i think) the biggest problem is when your rendering an animation and it stops after the first frame beacause you get the 'exeption thrown' error.

but when all is said and done i would never go back to max i find maya quicker and easyer to use ( apart from rendering of course ), and it just better at modeling/dynamics and youve also got paint effects (though iv never used them)
hope that helps

that clears a few things up. Like I said earlier I saw some renders and didn't think it was that bad, but I never factored time into the equation. Thanks guys

As far as shading network goes, maya is amazing,
it has no limits, if you get into it,
and learn a bit more about how it works,
it can get really really really cool :)
But I don't think it makes Maya's renderer a good
renderer 'cause when it comes to rendering :annoyed:
I always end up having all kind of problems with it
(weird shadows, sizzling bump maps and more)
I've worked with Max and Lw, and they seem to be
less pain in the ___ when you hit the render button.
But overall, I prefer Maya because of it's flexibility and... well... a hundred other reasons so... ;)

I think AW answered it themselves - Mental Ray _free_ with 4.5.

The renderer has no interface - ???? - hence the prevalence of 3rd party scripts and apps like RenderPal.

It's way buggy - it likes to forget your settings - it likes to crash whilst your rendering "in the background" (if you can't work in the foreground without it freaking out - why have the option of rendering "in the background").

It also causes havoc with systems like Alienbrain.

It has really bad motion blur, dof and flickering shadows.

Oh yeah - it's REEAALLLY freakin slow!

It's the same from every Maya user: I love Maya, love it to pieces, but that damn renderer...

Just wish A|W had been able to sort something out with Pixar, but hey you can't have everything I suppose. Programming Mental Ray is a nightmare, but then I suppose most people just want to hit the render button. *sulk*
