I'm modeling in Maya 8.
Here is what I have so far over 20 hours not counting time searching for images. I'll try to keep my newest image right here.

IMAGE PLANES
I like useing geometry with images on it instead of image planes. That seems to give me more control on moving it around and turning it on and off quickly with layers. Instead of useing x ray or wireframe I right click and select material attributes, then adjust the transparancy of the basic lambart shader.
BASE EYE FOR MODELING
Made an image planes and created an eye that would be made live and used later with the create polygon tool.

I made the eye without looking at the side view which was a mistake that would eat up some time later.

I used the create polygon tool then tweaked it in the side view after a few edge loops.

I used the create polygon tool to define in between the lips. Then I extruded that way out and deleted my creation polygon. Then I slowly started to add edge loops.

I used the create poly tool again and snaped to vertices
